NEW DELHI – The BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers' meeting has adopted a declaration to strengthen social protection systems, enhance employability, and deepen cooperation in the labour and employment domain, the labour ministry said Wednesday. "The declaration reaffirmed the importance of South-South cooperation, mutual learning, and practical collaboration among BRICS members in addressing common labour market challenges," the ministry said in a press release.

 

As part of the declaration, the member countries agreed to progressively expand social protection coverage from existing levels as per nationally determined levels. These countries also agreed to work upon policy frameworks for women empowerment, including their participation in leadership roles, the labour ministry said in the release. BRICS is a group of 11 developing countries – India, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.

 

At the meeting, these member countries also committed to work together to create opportunities to exchange knowledge and help alleviate transition challenges through peer learning and South-South and Triangular cooperation, the release said. India, which chaired the 12th labour and employment ministers' meeting in Hyderabad, also launched 'BRICS CONNECT' to strengthen technical cooperation, knowledge exchange and capacity building among the member countries, it added.

 

The two-day meeting also discussed the progress of study on the International Reference Classification of Occupations being conducted by the International Labour Organization in collaboration with India and Brazil. Member states were encouraged to participate in the pilot study in sectors such as digital, care, and green, the release said. "We are confident and committed to building resilient labour markets that are formal, inclusive, gender-responsive, digitally empowered and future-ready, ensuring that no worker is left behind," Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.

 

The meeting also focused on advancing collective action in the areas of skills development and the use of digital technologies for inclusive and resilient labour markets, the release said.  End
