MUMBAI – Jana Small Finance Bank Ltd. posted a sharp jump in net profit for the June quarter, supported by a fall in provisions and a sharp rise in interest earned. This was the second consecutive quarter when the bank's net profit grew after six quarters of fall. However, the growth in total income was the slowest in four quarters.
The bank reported a net profit of INR 1.55 billion for the June quarter, up over 52% on year. The profit was higher than INR 1.33 billion projected by ICICI Securities, the sole brokerage tracking the company. The bank's interest earned for the quarter rose over 22% on year and around 5% on quarter to INR 15.15 billion. Its income on investment rose 10% on year to INR 1.23 billion for the reporting quarter. Its total income rose nearly 16% on year to INR 17.41 billion.
The lender's provisions and contingencies fell nearly 5% on year to INR 1.78 billion for the June quarter, aiding its bottom line. Sequentially, provisions were down nearly 9%. The gross non-performing asset ratio declined to 2.39% from 2.46% in the previous quarter while the net non-performing asset ratio eased to 0.91% as of Jun 30 from 0.92% a quarter ago. The bank's provision coverage ratio was 62.64% as of Jun. 30, down from 63.10% a quarter ago and 68.15% a year ago. The capital adequacy ratio under Basel-II norms was 20.18% as of the end of June.
The bank's operating expenses grew over 20% on year to INR 6.76 billion. Employee costs increased over 18% on year to INR 4.15 billion while other operating expenses rose over 23% to INR 2.61 billion. Interest expended increased nearly 12% on year to INR 7.32 billion.
The bank's net interest income rose to INR 7.82 billion for the quarter from INR 5.86 billion for the year-ago quarter and INR 7.36 billion for the March quarter. The net interest margin rose to 7.5% from 6.6% in the year-ago quarter and 7.2% a quarter ago.
The small finance bank reported a 25% year-on-year rise in total advances to INR 346.99 billion as of Jun. 30. Its total deposits rose 22% on year to INR 357.56 billion as of the end of the quarter. Its current accounts and savings accounts added up to INR 68.71 billion, up 31% on year. The bank's slippages for the quarter were lower by 13% from the March quarter and down 43% from the year-ago quarter. Its cost of deposits fell 50 basis points on year to 7.44% for the June quarter.
Wednesday, Jana Small Finance Bank's shares closed at INR 448.90 on the National Stock Exchange, down slightly from Tuesday. The bank declared its June quarter results after market hours. End
