MUMBAI – Despite crude oil prices near $85 a barrel and hostilities between the US and Iran persisting, headline equity indices settled slightly higher Wednesday. The indices rebounded from the previous day's losses as US President Donald Trump rolled back his decision to charge a 20?e on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. More than half the Nifty 50 constituents traded higher, with index heavyweight HDFC Bank gaining nearly 1%.
Trump dropped the plan for a 20% fee on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, and said he would instead replace it with "massive" trade and investment deals with Gulf states. "Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
At 1456 IST, the September futures contract of Brent Crude oil was 0.4% higher at $85.10 a barrel. Nuvoco Vistas Corp. was the leading stock in the Nifty 500, up 10.5%. The stock rose after the company said it expects cement volumes to grow 7–8% in the remainder of the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). Shares of the company extended their gains for a second session.
