--Cabinet OKs INR 625 bln for mobile phone manufacturing scheme
NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved the mobile phone manufacturing scheme with a total outlay of INR 625 billion. The scheme will help in scaling up the production, deepening domestic value addition, and strengthening supply chain resilience, a government release said.
The scheme will be for five years, starting from 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). "The scheme provides incentive support on eligible sales for manufacturing of mobile phones in India at differentiated rates ranging from 2.25% to 5%," the release said. It will also provide additional incentive of up to 1.5% linked to domestic sourcing of key components. An additional incentive of 3% on eligible sales for design and research and development of the product will help in building Indian brands, the government said.
Mobile phone manufacturing has emerged as a key driver for India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem, the release said. "India is now the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturer by volume, with 99.2% of mobile phones used in India being manufactured domestically...The scheme is expected to generate around 60,000 direct jobs aiding economic growth, employment generation and strengthening India's position in global electronics manufacturing hub," it said.
