MUMBAI – Wholesale sales of automobiles in the June quarter surged almost 24% on year to 9.34 million units as exports performed better than domestic sales, which also showed considerable strength, according to sales data disclosed by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers on Wednesday. A similar trend was reported in June, where total automobile despatches rose 22% on year to 2.93 million units--with exports growing faster than local sales.

Automobile manufacturers sold 7.38 million vehicles to Indian dealerships in the first quarter of 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), up 21% on year. Exports by these companies grew 34% on year to 1.96 million units. "Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles and Three-Wheelers posted their highest-ever Q1 sales, while all vehicle segments, including Two-Wheelers, recorded their highest-ever exports during the quarter," SIAM President Shailesh Chandra said in a press release.

"The strong performance across segments in Q1 of 2026-27, despite headwinds arising from disruptions in West Asia, can be attributed to supportive domestic demand, aided by lower GST rates, softer financing costs, low base effect and introduction of new models," Chandra said. Despite the steady consumer sentiment and demand for automobiles currently, the automobile industry is keeping a close watch on the geopolitical developments and the progress of the monsoon as the latter tends to drive agricultural output and rural demand.

In the June quarter, despatches of two-wheelers in India grew 20% on year to 5.63 million units while their exports rose almost 37% on year to 1.55 million units. In India, the strength in growth of two-wheeler sales continued to be driven by scooters even as motorcycles grew at a healthy rate.

Domestic despatches of passenger vehicles in the June quarter increased nearly 26% on year to 1.27 million units. However, their exports grew at a much slower rate, at nearly 9% on year, to 222,392 units. Utility vehicles remained the shining star in both India and overseas, even as passenger vehicles disappointed abroad.

The wholesale sales of commercial vehicles in India grew 18% on year to 264,831 units, and their exports grew 43% to 27,839 units in the June quarter. The wholesale sales of light commercial vehicles outperformed those of medium-heavy commercial vehicles, driven by strength in light goods carriers.

In the June quarter, local wholesale sales of three-wheelers grew 30% on year to 214,339 units. Abroad, their sales surged almost 58% on year to 151,118 units in the same period. In India, despatches of every single sub-segment grew over 20% on year in the June quarter.

Overall, production of automobiles in the June quarter grew 22% on year to 9.36 million units--keeping pace with the growth in their wholesale sales in India. The output of three-wheelers grew the fastest, at 39% on year to 357,002 units in the last quarter, while that of commercial vehicles grew the slowest--at 15% to 297,143 units.

Automakers manufactured 7.25 million two-wheelers in the June quarter, up 23% on year, with a particular focus on scooters. Output of passenger vehicles saw an uptick of around 17% on year to 1.45 million units as utility vehicles continued to find more favour on factory floors.

JUNE PERFORMANCE

In June, automobile companies sold 2.26 million vehicles to dealerships in India, up 19% on year. Overseas, they sold 673,105 vehicles, up a touch over 34% on year. Domestically, bulk of their wholesale sales continued to be driven by two-wheelers, however, three-wheelers posted the fastest growth among all segments.

Domestic despatches of two-wheelers grew 19% on year to 1.85 million units while their exports grew 40% to 543,684 units. Companies manufactured 2.50 million two-wheelers in June, up 28% on year.

Local wholesale sales of passenger vehicles grew 18% on year to 326,068 units even as their exports registered a minor fall to 76,601 units. Output of this segment almost kept pace with growth in domestic sales, as companies made 386,467 units, up 18% on year.

Three-wheelers outperformed the lot, as their domestic sales jumped 26% on year to 77,951 units and exports grew 40% to 51,950 units. Automakers manufactured 132,196 three-wheelers in June, up 43% – indicating expectation of further growth in the coming months.
