MUMBAI – US President Donald Trump Tuesday walked back on the plan of charging a 20% fee on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, and said that he would instead replace it with a "massive" trade and investment deals with Gulf states. This comes a day after Trump announced his proposal to charge a 20% fee to guard the strait and provide safety and security in the region.

"Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States," Trump said in a post on social media platform Truth Social. 

While Trump did not give any details about the deals made with and any commitments made by the Gulf states, he mentioned that "Those Investments will be MASSIVE but, at the same time, extraordinarily good for them, and their future."

Trump also mentioned in his post that the Strait of Hormuz was open to all ship traffic except for Iran, and said that the US will move ahead with a full blockade on ships coming to and from Iranian ports, or if they are carrying Iranian cargo. Shortly afterwards, the US Central Command said that the US blockade on Iranian ports had resumed.

"US forces resumed the naval blockade against vessels transiting to and from Iranian ports and coastal areas today at 4 p.m. ET (0130 IST). There are currently more than 20 US Navy warships and hundreds of military aircraft operating across the Middle East. American forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready," the US Central Command said in a post on social media platform X early on Wednesday.

Trump on Monday had said the world's biggest military power would be known as "The Guardian of the Hormuz Strait" from now on and would charge a fee, which would be 20% of the cost of all cargo shipped through the strait as the cost of protection.  End
