--Govt to release Index of Services Production on 29th of every month
NEW DELHI – India's services sector reported a healthy output growth in April, with output of sub-sectors such as accommodation, retail trade, and administrative services leading the growth, data released Tuesday by the statistics ministry showed. This is the first set of data under the Index of Services Production, which is running on a trial basis to measure short-term changes in the growth of India's formal services sector. This index will serve as a counterpart of Index of Industrial Production, which measures the economic growth of the industrial sector.
"14 out of the 19 sub-sectors recorded double-digit growth in April 2026 as compared to April 2025," Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said in a press release. The 19 sub-sectors listed by the ministry cover about 60% of the services sector, the release added. The new index, with 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) as the base year, is released for April and FY26.
Among all the 19 sub-sectors, accommodation and food sector output rose the highest at 37.2% on year in April, followed by retail trade output rising 30.8% on year, administrative and support output growing 28.7%, and real estate output up 27.7%. Other sectors showing robust services sector output included telecommunications, which rose 22.8%, followed by repair services rising 19.2%, wholesale trade services rising 15.3% and information and computer related services rising 15.2% in April.
Within the transport sector, the output of road transport services grew 18.5% during the month under review, while that of water transport services rose 5.7%. Among financial services, banking services output increased 12.2% on year in April and insurance services output rose 15.6%.
In FY26, accommodation and food sector output had grown 35.6%, followed by retail trade output rising 30.5%. The other top sub-sectors in FY26 included repair services, wholesale trade services, road transport services, and warehousing services.
The statistics ministry has rolled out the new index with an aim to provide more timely insights into the services sector activity. The index holds significance as the services sector contributes more than half of India's gross value added. The ministry will release Index of Services Production on the 29th of every month.
The experimental indices will track goods and services tax, the Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises, and other administrative data to map the formal services sector output. Some of the services excluded from the indices as of now are public administration and defence, financial services activities of the Reserve Bank of India, and money market funds, activities of private households with employed persons, and gambling and betting activities. These services have been excluded from the scope of Index of Services Production due to lack of coverage under different data sources. End
