MUMBAI – Investors turned sellers in the equity market on Tuesday as crude oil prices neared $90 per barrel amid further escalation of the war in West Asia. After rising for two sessions, both benchmark equity indices closed 0.7?ch lower as investor sentiment soured following US President Donald Trump's threat to impose shipping fees on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also reinstated the blockade of Iranian ports, raising fears of disruptions to crude oil supplies. The rupee also weakened, settling at 96.20 per dollar as crude oil prices jumped.
"The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "We are reinstating THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran's ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait."
"The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as 'THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,'" Trump said. "But as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World." He also said the process and formation will begin immediately.
On Tuesday, the Nifty 50 closed at 24052.05, down 158.95 points from Monday's close. The BSE Sensex settled at 77054.94, down 561.46 points from the previous close. India VIX, the market's fear gauge, rose 3.5% to 13.7500 points. At 1457 IST, the September futures contract of Brent crude oil was nearly 4% higher at $86.37 a barrel.
Among broader market indices, small-cap indices ended over 1% lower, while mid-cap indices settled around 0.5% lower. Most sectoral indices ended lower. The Nifty Realty, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Auto, Nifty Bank, and Nifty Financial Services ended 1.1–2.0% lower. Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Consumer Durables ended largely flat to 1% higher.
After announcing June-quarter results on Monday, HCL Technologies slipped into the red on Monday, snapping a three-day rally. The stock was the biggest laggard in the 50-stock index, down 4.5%. The company did not raise its sales growth guidance for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), despite robust new deal wins totalling $2.41 billion in the June quarter and a mega deal win it reported earlier this month.
Banking and financial services stocks largely weighed on the index. Shriram Finance and HDFC Life Insurance Co. were among the top losers, each falling over 3%. State Bank of India, Jio Financial Services, and Bajaj Finserv declined over 2?ch.
Barring Tube Investments of India, all automobile stocks in the Nifty Auto index ended down. Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, and Maruti Suzuki India were down around 2?ch. The Nifty Auto index was down nearly 2%.
Realty stock Lodha Developers shed over 4% and was among the top losers in the Nifty 200 index. The stock was down for the second session. On the Nifty 200 index, KPIT Technologies was down over 3%. Aegis Vopak Terminals and Newgen Software Technologies, down over 7% and 6% respectively, were the top losers in the Nifty 500 index.
On the other hand, Bharti Airtel gained the most in the Nifty 50 index, up almost 2%. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries were up over 1?ch. Other pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks on the Nifty 50, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Cipla, were up around 1?ch.
Biocon and Container Corp. of India, up over 6?ch, were the major gainers in the Nifty 200 index. Shares of Biocon rose to an over-five-year high following reports that the global healthcare company Mylan plans to sell up to 92 million shares in the company. The stock was up for the third day in the past four sessions.
Shares of Container Corp. of India surged after the company Monday said its total throughput for the June quarter rose around 9% on year to 1.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units. This was better than Nuvama Wealth Management's expectations of a 6?ll in total handling volume.
Nuvoco Vistas Corp. ended as the biggest gainer in the Nifty 500 index, up almost 8%. The company surpassed the Street's estimates for net profit and revenue in the June quarter. The company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 1.60 billion on revenues of INR 31.29 billion.
