MUMBAI – An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the north Bay of Bengal, which is likely to cause the formation of a low pressure area over the same region in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said. Under the influence of this low pressure area, enhanced rainfall activity is expected over parts of the east, northeast, and the western Himalayan region in the next seven days, the weather department said.
The formation of the low pressure area is likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers over parts of Odisha till Wednesday, for which the department has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
Very heavy showers are expected over parts of Bihar till Wednesday, over Gangetic West Bengal on Thursday, and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Sunday and Monday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over multiple parts of east India till Monday. In northeast India, heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya till Monday and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from Wednesday to Saturday, the bureau said.
A western disturbance seen as a cyclonic circulation lues over north Pakistan, and an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Uttar Pradesh. The presence of these weather systems is expected to cause heavy rainfall with thundershowers and lightning over most parts of northwest India till Monday, the weather department said.
In west India, only Marathwada is expected to record heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Thunderstorm and lightning are likely over Konkan and Goa till Wednesday and over central Maharashtra on Wednesday and Thursday, while light to moderate showers are expected over most parts of west India till Monday. Heavy showers are expected in parts of Chhattisgarh till Wednesday, while a wet spell with thunderstorms and lightning are likely over several parts of central India till Monday.
Strong surface winds are likely over parts of Kerala till Wednesday, over parts of Karnataka and Telangana till Monday, and over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Saturday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to persist over many parts of south peninsular India till Monday, the bureau said.
Heatwave conditions are expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry till Wednesday, the bureau said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely in pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab till Thursday, over parts of Karnataka and Telangana till Wednesday, and over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh till Friday, the bureau said.
