India Monday rainfall 66% below normal, season's deficit at 19%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India continued to record below-normal rainfall Monday as the monsoon remained weak over north-west, central, and south peninsular India. The country received 3 millimetres of rainfall Monday, 66?low the normal of 8.8 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. In the period Jun. 1-Jul. 13, India received 222.4 millimetres of rainfall, 19?low the normal of 275.7 millimetres. 

 

Three out of four homogeneous regions in the country recorded below-normal precipitation Monday. Rainfall in central India was 99?low normal, with zero precipitation against the normal of 9.7 mm, the data showed. Nine out of 10 subdivisions in the region recorded no rainfall Monday.

 

The south peninsular region recorded 96?low-normal rainfall, receiving 0.2 mm against the normal of 6 mm. Six out of 10 subdivisions in the region did not record any rainfall.

 

The north-west region recorded 70?low-normal rainfall at 2.1 millimetres against the normal of 7 mm, the data showed. Rainfall in east and north-east India was at 14.5 mm, or 10?ove normal.

 

In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 14, "deficient" in five, and "normal" in three Monday, according to the data. One subdivision each recorded "large excess" and "excess" rainfall while 12 subdivisions recorded no showers.  End
