MUMBAI – After rallying for two sessions as geopolitical tensions eased and crude oil prices cooled, the benchmark equity indices ended largely flat Monday. The indices had opened lower after the US and Iran struck each other's assets over the weekend. Concern about the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the subsequent rise in crude oil prices hurt domestic equity market sentiment. However, after a volatile afternoon session, the indices managed to settle in positive territory, even if just about.

Iran responded to a fresh wave of attacks from US forces by launching attacks on American military bases in several Persian Gulf states, deepening a standoff over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to a CNBC report. "US Central Command said Sunday that American forces had successfully hit dozens of targets at multiple locations, including by using one-way attack sea drones for the first time," CNBC reported.

The Brent Crude September futures contract rose over 2% from its previous close to hover around $80 a barrel. At 1440 IST, the contract was up 2.5% at $77.92 a barrel. Crude oil prices are now 7% higher than the pre-war levels.

"Markets started the day on a negative note but recovered from the lows hinting at buying interest on any dips in spite of all geopolitical news flows," Ruchit Jain, head of technical research at Motilal Oswal, said. Monday, the Nifty 50 closed at 24211, up a mere 4.10 points from Friday's close. The BSE Sensex settled at 77616.40, up 47.01 points from the previous close.

In the broader market, the small-cap indices outperformed their benchmark peers, though only slightly, to close slightly up. The sectoral indices showed a mixed performance, with the Nifty IT rising the most and Nifty FMCG falling the most. India VIX, the market's fear gauge, rallied over 8% to 13.2800 points, indicating a rise in nervousness among investors. The volatility index rose after falling for two sessions.

All constituents of the Nifty IT index rose ahead of the June quarter earnings announcement of HCL Technologies later in the day. Tata Consultancy Services was the top gainer in the Nifty 50, up over 5%. HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and Wipro were up 1.7–4.9%. The Nifty IT ended nearly 4% higher.

Shares of TCS rose after the company Monday announced a multi-million-dollar deal with the ABB Group to improve the Swiss conglomerate's global network operations through the use of artificial intelligence.

HCL Technologies is expected to post flat net profit growth for Apr-Jun and a marginal quarter-on-quarter rise in revenue, helped by depreciation of the rupee against the dollar. The company's consolidated net profit for the June quarter is likely to remain largely unchanged on a sequential basis at INR 44.86 billion. However, on a year-on-year basis, this would translate to a rise of almost 17%. Its revenue for the quarter is expected to be INR 344.38 billion, up 1.3% sequentially and over 13% on year.

The Nifty Media and Nifty Consumer Durables were the other big gainers among sectoral indices, up 1.2–2.1%. Titan Co. was up marginally.

Select automobile stocks in the Nifty 50 index also rose. Bajaj Auto gained over 2%. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Mahindra & Mahindra settled around 1% higher each.

Kalyan Jewellers India was the top gainer in the Nifty 200 index, up over 7%. The stock rose for the fourth session on optimism after global brokerage Citigroup maintained its "buy" call on Kalyan Jewellers with a target price of INR 750. Shares of the jewellery company have gained around 44% during these four sessions.

Newgen Software Technologies, up over 14%, was the top performer in the Nifty 500. Sonata Software and CE Info Systems rose around 10?ch in the Nifty 500.

Shares of Fino Payments Bank were up over 19% after the release of its business update for June. The bank's loan disbursements grew more than three times to INR 2.4 billion from INR 680 million a year ago.

NTPC rose 2?ter the company Saturday said it had approved an investment of INR 204.57 billion for the third stage of the Lara Super Thermal Power Project in Chhattisgarh, which has an existing capacity of 1.6 gigawatts. After falling for five days, the stock began to rise Friday.

Metal and fast-moving consumer goods stocks were the major drags on the Nifty 50 index. The Nifty FMCG and Nifty Metal indices were the top losers among sectoral indices, down around 1?ch. Grasim Industries and Tata Steel saw the biggest fall in the 50-stock index, down over 2?ch.

Nestle India, Eternal, and Tata Consumer Products were down 1.2–1.9%. Index heavyweights Bharti Airtel, Reliance Industries, and HDFC Bank also fell around 1?ch, preventing the Nifty 50 rising.

In the Nifty 200 index, Siemens Energy India fell over 3% and was the key laggard. GE Vernova T&D India, Indian Bank, and Bharat Dynamics were also down over 3?ch. Shares of Bharat Dynamics fell after a media report that the government plans to include private players in missile manufacture.

Jammu & Kashmir Bank, down over 5%, was the biggest laggard in the Nifty 500. Allied Blenders and Distillers and Ather Energy were down over 3?ch. Shares of Avenue Supermarts fell over 2?ter the company detailed its June quarter earnings Saturday.
