NEW DELHI – India'a merchandise trade deficit widened on year to a five-month high in June due to higher imports of petroleum and crude oil. According to data detailed by the commerce ministry Monday, India's goods trade deficit rose over 59% on year to $30.43 billion in June.
The June trade deficit was higher than $28.21 billion in May. Economists at State Bank of India had expected the trade deficit in June around $26.5 billion.
Goods exports rose 15.5% on year to $40.41 billion in June. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said India was seeing a recovery in outbound shipments of goods beginning June. India's imports jumped 31% on year to $70.84 billion last month. In May, India had exported goods worth $45.20 billion and imported goods worth $73.41 billion.
The services trade surplus moderated 6.8% on year to $15.11 billion in June due to a 12.7% rise in services imports at $17.92 billion. Services trade exports inched up 2.9% on year to $33.03 billion last month.
The overall trade--goods and services--deficit widened multifold on year to $15.31 billion in June, with overall imports growing 26.8% on year to $88.76 billion. Overall exports rose 9.5% on year to $73.45 billion in June.
In Apr-Jun, India's merchandise trade deficit widened over 26% on year to $86.86 billion. Merchandise imports rose to $216.18 billion in Apr-Jun, up from $180.31 billion a year ago, while exports grew to $129.32 billion during the period.
India's merchandise imports rose during Apr-Jun, mainly due to higher inbound shipments of petroleum products, crude oil, and electronic goods. India imported crude oil worth $60.62 billion during Apr-Jun, higher than $49.24 billion a year ago. Non-oil imports increased to $155.56 billion in Apr-Jun from $131.07 billion in the corresponding period a year ago.
Within non-oil imports, electronic goods imports surged to $38.46 billion during the period from $26.75 billion a year ago. Gold shipments rose to $11.01 billion in the first three months of the current financial year, up from $7.49 billion a year ago.
China was India's biggest import source nation in Apr-Jun, with goods imports worth $38.04 billion, up from $29.73 billion a year ago. Imports from Russia rose nearly 53% on year in Apr-Jun to $25.60 billion.
Imports from the US rose to $16.65 billion in Apr-Jun from $13.45 billion a year ago. While the outbound shipment to the US was marginally lower at $25.47 billion in the first quarter of the current financial year.
Exports to China increased nearly 28% on year to $5.60 billion in Apr-Jun. Outbound shipments to Singapore jumped 101% on year in Apr-Jun to $6.52 billion. Goods exports to the United Arab Emirates were down 12% on year at $7.95 billion during the last three months.
During Apr-Jun, India's exports of petroleum products rose to $23.02 billion, up from $17.03 billion a year ago. Electronic goods exports increased to $34.14 billion during the period, higher than $28.91 billion a year ago. Exports of electronic goods grew to $15.20 billion in the last three months, up from $12.40 billion a year ago. End
