NEW DELHI – Trade deal negotiations between India and the US are progressing well and a framework agreement with the world's largest economy is ready, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said Monday. The deal will be signed at the right time, he said at a press conference to announce trade data.

 

Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said he had "fantastic meetings with USTR (US Trade Representative) Jamieson Greer when he visited Delhi in June". The two sides remain committed "to an agreement that is balanced, commercially meaningful, and delivers tangible benefits for businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers in both countries," Goyal said in a post on X.

 

Negotiations for a trade pact have seen many ebbs and flows, with the two countries having major differences over opening New Delhi's sensitive agricultural sector to Washington's genetically modified products. The US President Donald Trump administration's steep reciprocal tariffs and the recent Section 301 probe have also added to the complexity of finalising a deal. 

 

The two countries had on Feb. 7 issued a joint statement, agreeing on a framework for an interim agreement for mutually beneficial trade, but are yet to finalise the first phase of the trade agreement. According to Agrawal, the two countries are on the "same page" on the deal, and there are no challenges or disruptions in securing it with the US. All aspects of trade relations between the two countries will be addressed in the deal, he said.

 

The US is India's largest export destination. India's exports to the US in Apr-Jun totalled $25.47 billion, marginally lower than a year ago. Imports from Washington, on the other hand, rose to $16.65 billion from $13.45 billion last year. India and the US had a total trade of $132.14 billion in FY26, with India exporting $86.51 billion in goods to the US and importing $45.63 billion from the world's largest economy.

 

Earlier in the day, a news report said that India rejected a quick trade agreement with the US in recent talks and is holding out for a better deal with a clear focus on competitive advantage over peer nations like China. Tagging the report as "completely false, baseless and misleading", Goyal said Washington and New Delhi remained "fully engaged in achieving" the objective of a fair and mutually beneficial deal.  End
