NEW DELHI – The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has rolled out an amnesty scheme to provide a one-time window for organisations operating exempted provident fund trusts to be regularised under the Income Tax Act, 1961, the labour ministry said Sunday. The scheme, notified on Jun. 29, will be open for six months, according to a press release by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Under this scheme, establishments that have been operating a Provident Fund Trust recognised under the Income Tax Act, 1961, but do not possess a formal exemption notification from the central or state government can apply to regularise their status, the release said. The scheme will help the said establishments to regularise their status retrospectively. "Exemption status and Trust recognition will be granted from the inception of the Trust up to the designated cut-off date," the ministry said.

The Finance Act, 2026 has aligned the Income Tax framework governing recognised provident funds with the statutory and administrative provisions of the Employees' Provident Fund & Misc. Provisions Act, 1952. Establishments that are not under the exempted provident fund trusts list are required to submit a formal application and expression of interest indicating their willingness to avail the scheme, the release added.  End
