India Sunday rainfall 75% below normal, season's deficit at 18%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India continued to record deficient rainfall over the weekend as monsoon remained weak over northwest, westcentral, and south Peninsular India. The country received 2.2 millimetres of rainfall on Sunday, 75% below the normal of 9.1 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1-Jul. 12, India received 219.4 millimetres of showers, 18% below the normal for the period.
All four homogenous regions in the country recorded a below-normal precipitation on Sunday. Weather systems were absent over several parts of the country. The monsoon trough remained to the northwest of the country, while some weak weather systems such as upper air cyclonic circulations were restricted to parts of east India. Rainfall in east and northeast India was 57% below normal at 6.4 millimetres, the data showed. In northwest India, rainfall was 54% below normal at 3.5 millimetres.
Rainfall in south peninsular India was 92% below normal at 0.5 millimetres, according to the data. Central India recorded the highest shortfall in rains on Sunday, with only 0.2 millimetres, which is 98% below normal. Six out of the 10 subdivisions in the region did not record any rainfall on Sunday.
In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 21, "deficient" in six, and "normal" in two, according to the data. Seven subdivisions recorded no showers on Sunday. End
