MUMBAI – DMart operator Avenue Supermarts Ltd.'s sales for the June quarter missed the Street's view by a small margin while profit was in line with expectations. Like-for-like sales growth beat estimates of several brokerages though it contracted 160 basis points from a year ago. The company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation margin was a touch above consensus estimates.

Avenue Supermarts' net profit expanded almost 13% on year for the June quarter to INR 9.36 billion. Sequentially, the bottom line rose over 29%. Analysts had expected profit at INR 9.00 billion. Net Profit margin, however, was flat at 5.1%.

The company's total sales for the quarter were INR 183.43 billion, up 15% on year. This was along the lines of what the company had declared in its business update. Analysts had expected sales for the period to go up 17% year-on-year to INR 186.42 billion.

Avenue Supermarts' like-for-like sales growth stood at 5.5%, considerably lower than the 7.1% witnessed in the year-ago quarter. The company last posted this pace of growth for the September quarter of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). Further, its sales for square foot fell more than 2% to INR 85.71 billion while the retail business area rose almost 18% on year. However, business area was flat sequentially. This was likely due to the 58 stores net added in the March quarter.

"In large metros, growth in older stores which have significantly higher revenue per square foot was flat this quarter," Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Anshul Asawa said in the earnings press release. As of Jun. 30, the company operated 503 stores across 11 cities in India. The company added only three stores during Apr-Jun.

Avenue Supermarts' EBITDA went up by over 16% to INR 15.27 billion. The company's expenses for its goods to be sold went up 16.5% year-on-year while the change in value of its inventory supported profit growth. EBITDA margin for the quarter stood at 8.3%, as compared to 8.2% in the year-ago period.

During Apr-Jun, the company's sales mix was mostly unchanged. Its food operations made up 54.9% of the total mix, a tad lower than 55.6% in the year-ago quarter. Revenues from general merchandise and apparel went up slightly to 25.5% from 24.7%. Fast-moving consumer goods, meanwhile, comprised 19.6% of total sales. This was unchanged compared with the year-ago period.

During the reporting quarter, sales at DMart stores at least two-years old increased 5.5% on year against 7.1% a year ago. The retailer discontinued operations in seven cities, Vikram Dasu, the whole-time director and CEO of Avenue E-Commerce Ltd., said in the release. These operations contributed marginally to overall business, he said.

Further, Avenue Supermarts board appointed of Lalit Ahuja as the chief operating officer with effect from Monday and also approved a proposal to raise INR 10 billion through non-convertible debentures in one or more tranches on a private placement basis. Friday, shares of the company had closed flat at INR 4,081.10 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
