MUMBAI – Banks' year-on-year loan growth rose to a two-year high of 18.6% as on Jun. 30, data from the Reserve Bank of India released Friday showed. This continues the uptrend of strong credit growth in 2026, with deposit growth lagging. Deposit growth also increased in the second fortnight of June, marking an on-year rise of 13.3% to a record high of INR 265.38 trillion as of Jun. 30. This number includes inflows into foreign currency non-resident (bank) deposits after the RBI rolled out a swap facility on these dollar-denominated deposits of tenures ranging from three to five years.
However, banks' credit deposit ratio eased slightly to 82.63%, from 83.38% the previous fortnight, which was a record high. Banks' loans rose INR 3.81 trillion on fortnight to INR 219.28 trillion as of Jun. 30. Loan growth has also picked up due to government schemes, with the Centre having issued over INR 1.55 trillion of guarantees under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme 5.0 as of Jul. 7. In a note Friday, State Bank of India economists said India's economic growth may have exceeded expectations in the June quarter, supported by a sharp rise in bank credit and commercial paper issuances.
In December, the government changed the definition of a reporting fortnight under the banking laws. Under the amended regulation, the definition of "fortnight" has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period--either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive.
