NEW DELHI – Stocks of telecommunications firms are expected to hold steady next week in the absence of any perceived triggers, according to analysts tracking companies in the sector. The next event expected to induce stock-specific action is the June-quarter results announcement of companies. Analysts are particularly curious to learn Vodafone Idea's quarterly earnings, which is in the midst of a INR 450-billion turnaround exercise.
This week, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S. Krishnan said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has requested the ministry to be designated as an authorised agency to regulate applications that offer caller identification and call management services. The ministry is is in discussion with the Department of Telecommunications regarding the matter, Krishnan told reporters on the sidelines of the GCC Business Summit hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry here Thursday.
This is likely aimed at improving identification of calling parties –- curb spam calls as well as misidentification, which has been a big concern for the industry, Piyush Pandey, senior vice-president and research analyst at Centrum Broking Ltd., said. It will result in a better experience for the larger user base of telecom companies in the medium to long term, though it may lead to rationalisation of customer count in the near term, Pandey added.
Next week, the BSE telecommunications index is likely to find support at 3560 points and encounter resistance at 3770 points, according to Ganesh Angaj, head technical analyst at NVS Brokerage Pvt. Ltd. Beyond these intial levels, Angaj anticipates support for the index at 3450 points and resistance at 3845 points.
