MUMBAI – Nifty 200 companies are expected to post an on-year fall in bottom line for the June quarter despite a double-digit rise in the top line. The rise in crude oil prices during the quarter is expected to weigh on the earnings of downstream oil companies, which will pull down the overall aggregate net profit of Nifty 200 companies. However, this fall in the net profit is likely to be limited by steady earnings of banks. Financial services and oil and gas are the top two sectors in terms of weightage in the Nifty 200 index, and together account for 41% of the index.
The 182 Nifty 200 companies for which earnings estimates are available, are expected to post a 7?cline in net profit for the June quarter, according to an Informist poll of 13 brokerage firms. These companies are expected to report 18% growth in sales during the quarter. Nifty 50 companies, on the other hand, are expected to post 10% growth in net profit on the back of an 18% rise in sales during the latest quarter.
On a sequential basis, the aggregate net profit of the 182 Nifty 200 companies is expected to see a sharper 22?cline in the June quarter, while net sales are likely to see a mere 3% on-quarter rise. The net profit and revenue growth of Nifty 50 companies is expected to be flat on quarter.
The primary reason for the poor growth in net profit the June quarter is the impact of the war in West Asia. For the major part of the quarter, crude oil prices were above the $100-per-barrel mark, a level last seen in August 2022. Analysts expect this to pull down the June quarter earnings.
Oil companies are expected to underperform sharply as the spike in crude oil prices and depreciation of the rupee are likely to hit the retail margins of fuel companies, Nuvama Institutional Equities said in its earnings preview. The brokerage expects the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation of oil marketing companies to turn negative for the June quarter on weak sales due to the West Asia war.
SECTORAL LAGGARDS, OUTPERFORMERS
Banks and metal and mining companies are expected to post strong earnings growth for the June quarter and outperform most sectors in terms of profit growth. On the other hand, three major oil marketing companies are expected to put up the worst show in terms of profit during the quarter.
Indian Oil Corp., Hindustan Petroleum Corp., and Bharat Petroleum Corp. are all expected to post record losses. Oil marketing companies are said to have incurred large losses during the quarter due to the spike in crude oil prices after the war in West Asia broke out. The imposition of windfall levies on petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel is expected to cap the earnings upside for standalone refiners, according to Emkay Global Financial Services.
Upstream companies are expected to report a 27% on-year rise in net profit for the quarter, supported by a 28% increase in sales. The companies are expected to benefit from higher oil prices, resulting in higher crude realisations, and a weaker rupee, brokerages said. ONGC's and Oil India's crude realisations could jump around 30% on a sequential basis to $92–$94 per barrel, according to analysts. The EBITDA of both these companies is likely to more than double on quarter, driven by higher realisations and lower operating expenses, according to brokerages.
Of the 21 sectors in the Nifty 200, companies in five sectors – automobile and auto ancillary, airports and aviation, pharma and healthcare, cement, and power – are likely to post an on-year fall in net profit for the June quarter, despite an expectation of a double-digit rise in sales.
The 15 automobile and auto ancillary companies are expected to report a 4% on-year decline in their net profit but the revenue is seen rising 17% on year. There is no impact on the growth in total net profit and revenue of 182 Nifty 200 companies if these auto companies are excluded.
Two airports and aviation companies – GMR Airports and InterGlobe Aviation – are seen reporting a 19% drop in bottom line, while their revenue is seen rising 20% on year. The overall profit and revenue growth of these companies is not likely to affect the growth expected for 182 Nifty 200 companies if airports and aviation companies are excluded.
The net profit of 16 pharma and healthcare companies is projected to fall 4% on year with the revenue seen rising 14%. The 10 power companies' net profit growth is likely to be flat on year with a 13% rise in revenue. Even if these companies are excluded, the overall estimated growth in net profit and revenue of the 182 Nifty 200 companies remains unchanged.
Of the 182 Nifty 200 companies, 16 banks are expected to report 7% on-year growth in net profit for the quarter. Lenders are likely to see a quarter of steady earnings with only possible negative surprises from net interest margin contraction, Kotak Securities said in a report after analysing provisional business updates by banks. The brokerage believes asset quality is holding up well across banks and products, with no noticeable impact from the West Asia war.
Other brokerages concurred. "Not only has the impact from repo rate cuts played, the impact from MCLR (marginal cost of funds-based lending rate) reduction has also largely played out, with residual impact being offset by term deposit churn," YES Securities said in a report.
If banks are excluded, the aggregate bottom line of the 182 index companies is expected to fall 12% on year, worse than the 7?ll expected if banks are included. The aggregate top line of these index companies is expected to rise 19% on year if banks are excluded, which is slightly better than the 18% rise including banks. "We expect asset quality to stay broadly stable in 1QFY27F (Apr-Jun), with slippages and credit costs lower y-y (on-year) as unsecured retail and MFI (microfinance institutions) stress continues to normalize," brokerage Nomura said in a report.
With the demand environment remaining broadly unchanged and amid fears of artificial intelligence tools hurting growth prospects of information technology companies, the June quarter earnings of IT companies are likely to be subdued. The 11 IT companies in the 182 index group are likely to report a 3?ll in net profit and 3% growth in revenue for the June quarter. In the March quarter, these companies' net profit had fallen marginally on quarter and revenues had risen 3.6% sequentially. Without these companies, the net profit of the 182 Nifty 200 companies for the latest quarter is expected to fall 24% on quarter, compared to 22% including IT companies. The overall revenue growth is likely to remain unchanged at 3% sequentially even if IT companies are excluded from the analysis.
An expectation of 22% growth in the net profit of 25 financial services companies is likely to limit the fall in net profit of these 182 companies. Excluding these 25 companies, the net profit of these 182 companies is seen falling 10% on year, sharper than the 7?ll including the financial services companies.
Nine metal and mining sector companies are expected to post a 38% increase in their net profit for the June quarter on year on a 12% rise in revenue. Of these, four steel companies are expected to lead the earnings for this sector. Higher prices of flat products and an average sequential increase in steel realisation, driven by price hikes over the last two quarters, are likely to aid the earnings of steel companies, according to Kotak Securities.
