IT ministry gets 760 proposals from other ministries on AI use cases

NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has received 762 proposals from various Union ministries on the artificial intelligence applications they seek to implement, Secretary S. Krishnan told reporters on the sidelines of the GCC Business Summit hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry here Thursday.
"The prime minister had asked all ministries during the AI summit that they should visit the summit, hear the various speakers, and also visit the various stalls, etc., in the exhibition, and come back with where they think AI could be applied in their respective ministries," Krishnan said, adding that the IT ministry is working with the various ministries to identify how these proposals can be implemented.
On WhatsApp's proposed username feature, Krishnan said the deadline to respond to the ministry's notice ends Thursday. Last week, the Centre had issued a notice to Meta Inc. on the proposed username feature and flagged concerns that it could materially increase online fraud, phishing, digital arrest scams, and impersonation attacks. The IT ministry had also issued notices to WhatsApp rivals Telegram and Signal on their existing username features, widening the scrutiny of messaging platforms in India. "There is still a little more time, the replies have not yet been received. We will examine this issue...," Krishnan said.
Meta also has some more days to respond to the ministry's stern notice demanding an explanation on advertisements promoting child sexual abuse material, Krishnan said. The issue came to light after a BBC Eye investigation revealed that Instagram had allegedly been running paid advertisements promoting child sexual abuse material in India and that such advertisements linked users to channels on Telegram, where they could buy the material.
