MUMBAI – Tata Steel Netherlands has said criminal allegations against Tata Steel IJmuiden due to a limited number of coke and gas plant incidents from the past are "unnecessary" as there have been technical improvements, it said in a statement Wednesday. Tata Steel IJmuiden believes this case "adds nothing" as it has been in talks with the North Sea Canal Area Environmental Service on undercooked coke for a long time.

The criminal allegations are being reviewed, and a substantive defence will be presented during the court proceedings, it said. The company said the allegations are related to "allowing undercooked coke to occur" in its two coke and gas plants. While the company seeks to minimise the occurrence of such undercooked coke, it is "technically unavoidable" that occasionally a batch is not fully cooked. "Therefore, an absolute guarantee to prevent undercooked coke can never be given," the statement read.

The company further said that it has implemented substantial and tangible improvements since 2020, and such instances have declined 98%. "In recent years, only a few cases have occurred out of 135,000 pushes per year, with 1 instance in 2023, and zero in 2024 and 2025," it said, calling the allegations "unjustified."

The Public Prosecution Service of the Netherlands has summoned Tata Steel IJmuiden BV on suspicion of multiple criminal offences, including intentional and unlawful release of harmful substances into the air. The first preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20 at the Amsterdam District Court. Tata Steel IJmuiden BV is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Steel Ltd.

On Wednesday, shares of Tata Steel ended 0.8% lower at INR 188.20 on the National Stock Exchange. For the March quarter, Tata Steel had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 29.26 billion on revenue of INR 632.70 billion.  End
