NEW DELHI/MUMBAI – The rapid expansion in India's injectable semaglutide market appears to have plateaued after the launch of generic versions, although innovator brands continue to register a steady month-on-month growth by adding eligible patients and retaining prescribers, according to Pharmatrac's June Indian Pharmaceutical Market data presented at a webinar on Wednesday.
"The semaglutide injectable, somewhere the trends tell us that the market expansion that you were expected to see may have happened optimally. Because this exponential growth that was seen in the initial months, that seems to have plateaued....While there was a surge in the initial month, last month saw some plateauing, and this month the plateauing has actually increased. The innovators, however, continue to grow at a steady pace," said Sheetal Sapale, vice president, commercial, Pharmatrac.
Thirty-one generic semaglutide brands accounted for 82% of unit sales in June, while four innovator brands – Wegovy, Ozempic, Poviztra, and Extensio - contributed the remaining 18%. Semaglutide injectables volume rose to 202,000 units in June from 190,000 units in May, although the pace of incremental sales has slowed.
"The exponential consumption jump shown by semaglutide generics has now flattened. We don't see major jumps happening unit consumption now," Sapale said. She also added that the anti-obesity market has stabilised after generic launches expanded the patient pool.
Despite the slowdown, Pharmatrac expects the glucagon-like peptide-1 market to grow 111% in 2026, although at a slower pace than the 127.9% growth recorded in 2025. The glucagon-like peptide-1 market has grown to about INR 20.55 billion, with semaglutide accounting for INR 6.49 billion as of June. The Pharmatrac report also notes tirzepatide has "lost some ground" in June and is now back in line with pre-semaglutide-generic sales levels after recovering from the initial disruption.
Sapale added that the broader Indian pharmaceutical market remained robust, prompting Pharmatrac to raise its 2026 growth forecast for the industry to 11.3% from 8.1%, citing stronger-than-expected performance in the first half of the year.
"The market looks quite upbeat and we expect the IPM (Indian pharmaceutical market) to show a robust double-digit growth for the year ending December 2026," Sapale said. Nutritionals, dermatology, gynaecology, vaccines, and stomatological therapies have outperformed expectations and are among the key contributors to the improved outlook, according to the June data.
For June, the Indian pharmaceutical market recorded 13.3% value growth, with all therapy groups registering positive value growth. Price increases, higher volumes and new product launches supported the expansion, while volume growth was the strongest seen in the past 24 months. Anti-neoplastics and vaccines recorded double-digit growth in both value and volume. Among brands, Mounjaro retained the top position in both the monthly and moving annual total rankings, followed by Augmentin and Glycomet. End
