NEW DELHI – The gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurance companies in June rose 15.9% on year to INR 271.96 billion, according to data released by the General Insurance Council Tuesday. Growth in premium income in the standalone health insurers segment was higher than in the general insurers segment, the data showed. In May, non-life insurers' premium income was INR 241.95 billion, up 8.7% on year.

 

For the first quarter of 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), the gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurance companies was INR 878.25 billion, up 10.7% on year.

 

The gross direct premium of standalone health insurance companies was INR 43.73 billion in June, up 30.9% on year. General insurance companies saw a 14.3% on-year rise in gross premiums in June at INR 227.72 billion.

 

The New India Assurance Co. Ltd., the largest non-life insurer by market share, reported a 10.3% on-year rise in gross direct premium income in June at INR 36.70 billion. The market share of the public sector insurer was 14.5% in Apr-Jun, down from 15.5% a year ago.

 

ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. reported a premium income of INR 22.59 billion, up 13.7% on year. ICICI Lombard's market share slipped to 9.5% in the June quarter from 9.8% a year ago. Bajaj General Insurance Ltd.'s gross direct premium income for the month was INR 17.60 billion, up 21.8% on year.

 

The gross direct premium underwritten by HDFC Ergo General Insurance Co. Ltd. was INR 11.62 billion, up 33.5% on year. However, Go Digit General Insurance Ltd. reported a premium income of INR 7.20 billion in June, down 2.8% on year.

 

Among standalone health insurers, Star Health and Allied Insurance Co. Ltd.'s gross direct premium underwritten was INR 15.94 billion last month, up 19.2% on year. Niva Bupa Health Insurance Co. Ltd.'s gross direct premium income in June rose 34.3% on year to INR 7.98 billion. Among non-life insurance companies, health insurers had a 13.9% market share in June, higher than 11.5% a year ago.
