India auto retail sales rise 22% YoY, FADA says best ever June sales

MUMBAI – Overall automobile retail sales in India rose nearly 22% on year to 2.56 million units in June, logging the best ever sales in June in history, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said Monday. "June'26 has been a landmark month for Indian Auto Retail — the best June ever recorded, with Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, Commercial Vehicles, Passenger Vehicles and overall registrations each posting their highest-ever June figures," C.S. Vigneshwar, FADA president, said in a press release.
Total passenger vehicle retail sales for the month rose nearly 29% on year to 410,853 units. Two-wheeler retail sales rose over 21% on year to 1.83 million units. Retail sales of three-wheelers gained over 16% on year to 120,889 units and commercial vehicle retail sales rose around 17% on year to 90,972 units. Additionally, retail sales of tractors were up over 25% on year at 100,818 units, FADA data showed.
For the June quarter, total retail sales were at 7.84 million units, up over 15% on year. Of this, passenger retail sales were at 1.26 million units, up nearly 23% on year. Commercial vehicle sales rose nearly 14% to 280,495 units, two-wheeler sales gained over 14% to 5.68 million units, and three-wheeler sales rose 10% to 346,045 units. Tractors sales for the quarter were at 265,408 units, up nearly 22%.
For July, dealers are largely "constructive", with over 51% of them expecting a growth in retail sales. Nearly 42% of them see a flat market and nearly 7% expect a fall. "Expectations rest on the monsoon making up its deficit, Kharif sowing gathering pace and supplies staying normalised following the West Asia ceasefire and easing crude prices," FADA said.
The dealers' body said that the trajectory of monsoon remains the single most important variable for rural demand, alongside price-hike absorption and financing turnaround times. Overall, the outlook for July appears to be cautiously optimistic, according to FADA.
For the September quarter, over 66% of dealers expect a growth in retail sales, the strongest medium-term reading in recent surveys. Nearly 4% of the dealers expect a decline in retail sales. Dealers identify monsoon shortfall and El Nino impact on rural demand as the single biggest risk, along with further price hikes which affect affordability and inventory pile up, FADA said. End
