NEW DELHI – The government has directed app stores to remove three smartphone applications after reports that they were being misused to remotely disable battery-operated vehicles, particularly electric rickshaws, according to a post by PTI on microblogging site X.

The applications–-BAT-BMS, Lossigy, and Epoch-i-ion–-were allegedly used to turn off e-rickshaws in the middle of the road, leaving them stranded and causing traffic jams.
 

BAT-BMS, Lossigy, and Epoch-i-ion are utility apps developed by Chinese battery companies to test Bluetooth-enabled lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, according to a report by Bengaluru-based news daily Deccan Herald, which added that they are used to check the power levels of the battery, charging cycle count, cell voltage, and temperature.

"There are a couple of apps which came up to our notice yesterday. Both of them have been taken down from the app stores," a report by ANI quoted Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S Krishnan as saying.

The issue came to light after several videos circulating on social media showed users disabling e-rickshaw batteries through the applications. Some e-rickshaw drivers also claimed they had to seek paid assistance from bystanders to restart their vehicles after the batteries were remotely switched off.  End
