KOLKATA – Coal India Ltd. Thursday said it has increased coal supplies to the country's power plants to 51.44 million tonnes in June, a growth of nearly 6% on year. The rise in sales was driven by rising electricity demand in the peak summer season, the Maharatna company said in a statement.
During the quarter ended June, the company sold 154.75 million tonnes of coal to the power sector, a growth of 1.8% on year. Supplies to the power sector account for 80% of Coal India's annual sales volume. The company's overall coal supplies in June rose 7.5% on year to 65.8 million tonnes. Total coal sales during the June quarter stood at 197.7 million tonnes, up 3.5% on year.
Coal supplies to the non-regulated sector, primarily comprising steel, ferro-alloys, cement, and other sectors, registered 15% growth on year to 14.5 million tonnes in June. During the quarter, supplies to this sector rose 10% on year to 43.1 million tonnes.
The higher supplies also enabled Coal India to liquidate 28.3 million tonnes of pithead coal stock during the June quarter. The reduction was a conscious business decision to improve inventory turnover, reduce carrying costs, and enhance supply chain efficiency. This forms part of Coal India's consciously adopted strategy of demand-synchronised mining and inventory optimisation, marking a shift from a purely volume-driven approach to a value-driven and demand-responsive operating model, the company said. The objective of the approach is to meet consumer requirements while systematically reducing excess inventory accumulated over previous years.
Coal India recorded 23% year-on-year growth in coal supplies at 66.76 million tonnes through its first-mile connectivity infrastructure for the quarter. For FY27, the world's top coal miner has set a production target of 815 million tonnes and supply target of 850 million tonnes.
For the March quarter, Coal India had reported a net profit of INR 108 billion on revenues of INR 465 billion. Thursday, shares of the company closed at INR 438.90 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up 1% from Wednesday. End
