-- United Breweries gets demand of INR 1.16 bln from Patiala market committee

NEW DELHI – United Breweries Ltd. Thursday said it had received a demand notice of INR 1.16 billion from the Assessing Authority-cum-Secretary, Market Committee, Patiala, in Punjab, over alleged non-payment of market fee and rural development fund on barley transactions undertaken between Apr. 1, 2020 and Mar. 31, 2026.

The demand comprises INR 93.46 million towards market fee, INR 934.64 million as penalty, INR 93.46 million towards the rural development fund, and INR 40.96 million as interest on the rural development fund up to Jun. 30, taking the total demand to INR 1.16 billion, as per the exchange filing.

The assessment order, received along with the demand notice on Wednesday, alleges that the company purchased, stored and processed barley within the notified area of the Market Committee, Patiala, but failed to deposit the applicable market fee and rural development fund. The authority has also held that barley brought into Punjab from outside the state is deemed to have been purchased or sold within the notified market area and is, therefore, liable for these levies.

United Breweries said it will challenge the assessment order and demand notice before the appropriate forum, as it considers them "arbitrary, factually and legally incorrect". The company added that any financial impact would be limited to the amount demanded under the notice, if at all.

For the March quarter, the company reported a net profit of INR 1.02 billion on revenues of INR 44.06 billion. Thursday, shares of the company closed nearly 0.1% lower at INR 1,357.20 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
