Coal India Jun output declines 0.6%, sales rise 7.5%

MUMBAI – Coal India Ltd. reported a near 1% decline in its coal production for June, mainly on the back a sharp fall in production at its largest subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. The Maharatna company's sales, on other hand, grew 7.5% on year in June, despite the fall in production. 

 

The state-owned coal mining and refining company's production fell 0.6% on year to 57.4 million tonnes in June, while sales grew 7.5% on year to 65.8 million tonnes. During Apr-Jun, total production declined 7.5% on year to 169.6 million tonnes, while sales increased 3.5% on year to 197.7 million tonnes. 

 

Production at Mahanadi Coalfields, fell 18.3% on year to 14.5 million tonnes in June, but sales increased 3.5% on year to 18 million tonnes. The second-largest subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd.'s production grew 7.8% on year to 14.4 million tonnes and sales rose 4.8% on year to 16.3 million tonnes in June. 

 

The company's third-largest subsidiary, Northern Coalfields Ltd. reported a 0.1% decline in its production to 11.2 million tonnes in June. Its sales grew 1.1% on year to 11 million tonnes last month. Eastern Coalfields Ltd.--which has superior grades of coal compared with other subsidiaries--registered an 11.8% on-year rise in output to 3.9 million tonnes and 10.1% rise in sales to 4.4 million tonnes. 

 

Bharat Coking Coal Ltd., which was recently listed on bourses, posted dismal numbers. Production tanked 11.8% on year to 2.3 million tonnes while sales were flat on year at 2.7 million tonnes. 

 

For the March quarter, Coal India reported a consolidated net profit of INR 108.39 billion on revenue of INR 464.90 billion. At 1251 IST, shares of the company traded at INR 434.25 on the National Stock Exchange, down over 1% from the previous close.  End
