NEW DELHI – The continued pace of bank loan growth in the June quarter pushed up banks' credit-deposit ratio to a record high as of Jun. 15, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Tuesday. The credit-deposit ratio expanded to 83.38% from 82.74% a fortnight ago as outstanding loans rose more than deposits during the period. The previous record was 83.04% as of Mar. 15.

Banks' loans rose 17.65% on year to INR 215.16 trillion as of Jun. 15, keeping up the annual pace from the data released for May 31. Bank credit grew by INR 317.14 billion in the first half of June. However, deposits fell INR 1.61 trillion in the same period to INR 258.42 trillion as on Jun. 15. Deposits were up only 12.0% on year as of mid-June, lower than 12.2% growth as on May 31.

Despite the rising credit-deposit ratio, investments by banks picked up pace with the year-on-year growth as on Jun. 15 the highest since mid-October. Banks' investments grew 5.65% on year to INR 70.70 trillion as on Jun. 15, up INR 351.94 billion on fortnight.

In December, the government changed the definition of a reporting fortnight under the banking laws. Under the amended regulation, the definition of "fortnight" has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period--either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive.
