MUMBAI – Shares of most pharmaceutical companies are expected to rise more next week on a combination of factors including the sector's relative immunity to a weak monsoon, new opportunities in the US, strong domestic sales performance, and defensive buying. However, analysts said defensive purchases during the war in West Asia have pushed up share prices of pharmaceutical companies, which may limit meaningful upside in the medium-term.

Investors will turn their attention to the upcoming June quarter earnings of pharma companies. "The most important commentary, according to me, will be how they perform in (the) US and what is next (in the US product pipeline)," an analyst at a domestic brokerage said. "(Slowdown in) US business is a trend we have seen throughout last year and in (the) upcoming few quarters we'll find out whether companies have found good replacements for the drug (generic Revlimid). Largecap players reported almost no sales of the high-margin drug in the March quarter, which affected profitability in their US business sharply.

"Pharmaceuticals (sector) with inelastic demand is, normally, an out-performer during deficient monsoons, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Ltd, said. Some analysts added that pharmaceutical stocks may see more investments in case a lackadaisical monsoon leads to pressure on discretionary spending and consequently, on consumer-facing companies.

This week, the Nifty Pharma index ended over 2% higher at 24969.50 points. Cipla, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and Piramal Pharma rose the most among Nifty Pharma constituents and gained 5.5-6.5% during the week. Meanwhile, Wockhardt, Abbott India, and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals declined 2–3% in the week.

"The Nifty Pharma index is moving north in a higher-high and higher-low formation following its breakout from a two-year-long congestion zone during the first week of May," Vipin Kumaar, assistant vice-president at Globe Capital Markets said. "Going forward, we reiterate our bullish view on the Nifty Pharma index as long as it remains above the 24000 level on a closing basis, and we expect it to test the 25600–25800 levels in the near term," he said. Kumaar suggests traders maintain a "buy on dips" trading approach. For the coming week, the analyst sees the sector finding support at 24500–24200 levels and for it to face resistance at 25600–25800 levels.
