MUMBAI – Bharti Airtel Ltd. net added more mobile subscribers than Reliance Industries Ltd.'s Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. in May, even as the latter continued to retain the top spot, data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India showed Thursday. Vodafone Idea Ltd. added subscribers, but state-run firms Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and MTNL Ltd. both saw a net reduction in subscribers, data showed.

 

Bharti Airtel added 2.93 million net subscribers to its mobile network in May, bringing its subscriber base to 483.81 million. Reliance Jio added 2.15 million users, taking its subscriber count to 501.44 million users, the highest in India. Vodafone Idea added 121,289 subscribers in May, bringing its subscriber count to 198.66 million.

 

BSNL lost 104,660 subscribers, while MTNL lost 3,803. While the former has a subscriber count of 92.91 million, the latter has 177,761.

 

Overall, Indian telecom operators added a net 5.09 million mobile users in May, compared to 6.18 million in April and 8.43 million in March. Reliance Jio leads the market with a share of 39.3%, closely followed by Bharti Airtel at 37.9%. Vodafone Idea holds a 15.6% share, while BSNL and MTNL hold 7.3% and 0.01%, respectively.  End
