MUMBAI – Expectations of improvement in global information technology services spending in 2026 may take a hit as near-term caution persists amid the uncertain geopolitical environment, higher competition, artificial intelligence-driven productivity expectations and execution risks, domestic IT bellwether Wipro Ltd. said in its integrated annual report for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). This may be further amplified by shortage of skilled AI talent, the company added.

Last week, Irish technology giant, Accenture scaled back its sales growth guidance for the financial year 2025-26 (Sept-Aug), signalling near-term growth pressure amid a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. This has renewed concerns over discretionary spending towards IT services globally.

Meanwhile, according to the Strategic Review 2026 by the National Association of Software and Service Companies, global IT services spending is expected to improve 4.2% on year in 2026. This will be led by rising artificial intelligence investments focused on scalable deployments and easing tariff and trade pressures, Wipro said. The outlook is favourable to vendors that can combine cost-efficient modernisation with scaled AI delivery with measurable outcomes, it said, while adding that the near-term caution due to the uncertain geopolitical environment may persist.

As companies move beyond AI pilots toward phased generative AI and agentic scaling, growth will remain sector-specific, driven by industry expertise, advanced AI capabilities and the ability to attract AI-native talent, the company said. It expects industry strategies to consolidate around core strengths while differentiating through platform-led offerings, services-to-solutions models, AI-led delivery models with agentic capabilities, outcome-based pricing, micro verticalisation, and selective mergers and acquisitions.

Furthermore, Wipro also expects hiring to shift from volume towards skills, with a focus on AI fluency, domain expertise, and productivity-based workforce models. "AI will augment many roles and reshape others," the company said, adding that it is investing in AI architects, prompt engineers, AI safety specialists, and forward-deployed engineers. Wipro has trained its existing workforce on foundational AI capabilities, and 76% of employees have completed advanced AI training through role-based pathways aligned to Wipro Intelligence, according to the annual report.

Despite a tough macro environment, the company is focusing on investments for the future, building capabilities aligned with where client demand is heading, not only where it has been, Srinivas Pallia, chief executive officer and managing director of the company, said in the report. Going forward, the company will continue to focus on its consulting-led, AI-powered approach, strengthening client relationships, new opportunities, and investments in differentiated capabilities that would help it lead in an AI-first world. Further, the company continues to leverage advanced large language models from frontier labs such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, integrating them into client offerings and internal workflows to deliver flexible, responsible, and enterprise-ready solutions.

At 1213 IST, shares of Wipro traded over 2% lower at INR 176.13 on the National Stock Exchange. For the quarter ended December, the company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 35.02 billion on revenue of INR 242.36 billion.  End
