NEW DELHI – Friday saw blockbuster announcements from Reliance Industries Ltd. regarding plans for the telecom and digital services business Jio Platforms Ltd., which also filed a draft red herring prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India for an initial public offer comprising a fresh issue of 270 million shares. In the promoter's annual general meeting, Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani said the average revenue per user is expected to rise significantly and that Jio True 5G will establish the foundation of India's next big digital leap, adding that the platform's network slicing will enable a new tier of high performance connectivity.

In a bid to prepare against any competition arising out of the launch of business tycoon Elon Musk's StarLink services in India, RIL hinted that it, too, was considering providing connectivity to remote locations in the country through satellites. Akash Ambani said Jio was evaluating the development of a sovereign low earth orbit satellite constellation.

One may wonder if these mega announcement will raise the bar for competitor Bharti Airtel Ltd. to make similar investments and reduce favour for the stock among investors. However, Piyush Pandey, senior vice-president and research analyst at Centrum Broking Ltd., ruled out any such reaction arguing that the telecom sector is large with only three meaningfully competing players. He said Bharti Airtel remains on a strong footing with net monthly subscriber additions. Further, the widely expected tariff hike in the next quarter and rising premiumisation among customers bode well for the player, he added.

Analysts' near-term outlook on stocks of telecommunications companies reamins positive. Next week, the BSE Telecommunication index is likely to find initial support at 3650 points and face resistance at 3850 points, according to Ganesh Angaj, head technical analyst at NVS Brokerage Pvt. Ltd. Beyond these levels, Angaj estimated support and resistance at 3575 points and 3930 points, respectively.

Friday, the key sectoral index ended 1.6% higher at 3743.09 points, even though a majority of the index contitutents ended the session in the red. The index rose 4.7% over the week as opposed to the 1.7% fall in the benchmark BSE Sensex.
