MUMBAI – The fast-moving consumer goods companies' stocks are likely to remain in a thin range next week as the sector lacks immediate triggers. Market participants await the quarterly business updates from FMCG companies to assess the demand situation. Additionally, delayed monsoon, rising crude oil prices, and the Reserve Bank of India's projections of a rise in food inflation continue to pose a downward pressure on the sector, according to analysts.

Growth in summer sales of FMCG companies is likely to be subdued despite unseasonally high temperatures amid a delayed monsoon as distributors did not stock up products in advance due to limited cash flows, industry officials and distributors told Informist. The value growth of the FMCG sector rose to 13.1% on year in the March quarter and volume growth was up by 5.4% on year, according to market research firm Worldpanel by Numerator. However, in the June quarter, this is likely to remain unchanged or may even fall.

Most FMCG companies hiked prices or reduced pack sizes to pass on the rise in commodity prices and inflationary pressures. FMCG bellwether ITC recently launched a new Classic brand of cigarettes, trimming the length, with a 41% drop in prices from the existing King-sized cigarettes.

This follows the muted demand for the brand after the government hiked the excise duty on cigarettes sharply. These newly introduced packs will likely prevent consumers from downgrading and sticking to their preferred brand. After the rise in excise duty, which was passed on to consumers, consumers had started downgrading to 74 mm packs from 84 mm cigarettes.

On Friday, the Nifty FMCG index closed 0.2% lower at 49558.70 points. The benchmark Nifty 50 index settled 0.6% lower at 24013.10 points. Over the week, the FMCG sectoral index gained 1.5%, almost similar to the 50-stock index, which rose 1.7%. However, so far this month, the Nifty 50 was up 2%, but the Nifty FMCG rose just 0.4%.
