--SBI to raise up to INR 600 bln via debt in FY27

MUMBAI – State Bank of India's board Wednesday approved raising up to INR 600 billion through the issuance of debt instruments in financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), according to an exchange filing. The funds can be raised in rupees or any convertible currency, according to the filing.

The bank can raise funds through long-term bonds, Basel-III-compliant additional tier-1 bonds or tier-2 bonds, as well as other instruments through public offers or private placement. The bonds will be open for subscription by Indian and overseas investors, subject to government approval where required.

The state-owned lender's decision comes on the back of the Reserve Bank of India incentivising foreign currency borrowing to increase capital inflows into the country. The central bank on Jun. 8 opened a dollar-rupee forex swap facility for overseas foreign currency borrowings by banks, at a concessional rate of 1.5% per annum compounded semi-annually. Bankers had expected SBI to be among the first to avail the facility.

For the March quarter, the country's largest bank had reported a net profit of INR 196.84 billion from a total income of INR 1.40 trillion. Thursday, its shares closed at INR 1,042.70 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.6% from Wednesday.  End
