NEW DELHI – All India Trinamool Congress leader and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the result of the election to the Bhabanipur assembly constituency, which Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari won. Adhikari defeated Banerjee by 15,505 votes in the constituency.

Trinamool Congress leader and advocate Kalyan Banerjee told reporters that Mamata Banerjee had come to the high court "to affirm the election petition which has been filed by her", challenging Adhikari's win as the election was conducted "improperly". After 12 rounds of counting, Mamata Banerjee and her election agent were roughed up and thrown out of the counting centre, he said.

After the results of the West Bengal assembly election were announced on May 4, Mamata Banerjee had held a press conference and said her party had not lost but the Bharatiya Janata Party had looted votes. Before the declaration of the results, she had claimed that she was beaten at the counting centre and her agents were not allowed inside. "They kicked me in the belly, kicked my back... the CCTV was switched off," she said. She alleged that the counting was rigged in Bhabanipur.

Earlier, 20 rebel members of Parliament of the Trinamool Congress joined the little-known Nationalist Citizens Party of India, possibly to dodge disqualification. The Nationalist Citizens Party of India is a registered political party that is not recognised by the Election Commission of India.  End
