MUMBAI – Domestic equity markets rallied Monday, tracking gains across global equity markets, as crude oil prices retreated sharply after the US and Iran reached an agreement to sign a peace deal by Friday, which will reopen the Strait of Hormuz. After rising almost 2?ch in early trade, both benchmark indices came off highs and ended the session around 1% higher.

The Nifty 50 index closed at 23853.90, up 231 points from the previous close. The BSE Sensex ended at 76264.33, up 736.38 points, after hitting a one-month high of 76821.07 intraday. The indices rose for the second straight session as investor sentiment improved on hopes of a US-Iran deal.

US President Donald Trump Monday said a peace deal had been reached between the US and Iran and that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened completely upon signing of the agreement. In a statement, the secretariat of Iran's Supreme National Security Council confirmed that the deal with the US includes the immediate suspension of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government served as a mediator in the negotiations, said the signing of the peace deal would take place in Switzerland Friday.

Following this, the August futures contract of Brent Crude Oil on the Intercontinental Exchange plunged 5.5% to an intraday low of $82.52 per barrel. Equity markets across the globe rallied following announcement of the deal to end the war in West Asia and reopen the Hormuz strait, the closing of which has roiled global energy markets for nearly four months. Further, the benchmark 10-year India government bond yield slid and was at 6.8641% at 1544 IST. The rupee, on the other hand, gained 0.4% and settled at 94.71 per dollar.

While the announcement of the US-Iran deal is seen improving investor sentiment, concerns persist over its implementation and any reaction from Israel, analysts said. Some analysts expect the easing of geopolitical risks, moderating government bond yields and foreign fund outflows from domestic equities, and a strengthening rupee to reinforce the positive market outlook. Others expect the volatility to continue until there is more clarity on the deal.

In the broader market, all indices outperformed the benchmarks and closed 1.1-1.5% higher. The India Volatility Index closed over 2% lower at 14.3525 points, showing investor nervousness easing. Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Realty, Nifty Consumer Durables, and Nifty Auto led the charge, up 2.6-4.0%. The Nifty Media, Nifty Healthcare, and Nifty Pharma, on the other hand, fell 0.1-0.7% and were the only sectoral indices to close in the red.

Shares of most automobile and auto ancillary companies rose as crude oil prices plunged after the US-Iran peace deal was announced. Bajaj Auto was the only automobile stock to defy the positive trend and fall over 1%. The company's management noted that demand appears to have slowed in the first two months of the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), brokerage Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in a report Monday. The management now expects the industry to post growth of 7–9% in the near term. "Given the rapid surge in input costs, the raw material basket is likely to jump by 4.5-5.0% of net sales in 1Q (June quarter) sequentially," the brokerage said.

Shares of auto financiers such as Shriram Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co, and Bajaj Finance also rallied as improved retail demand momentum for automobiles amid lower fuel prices is a positive for these companies. Most jewellery stocks and gold financiers also moved up as gold prices climbed after the US-Iran peace deal announcement.

Shares of oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corp., Bharat Petroleum Corp., and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. ended 2.5-3.3% higher amid falling crude oil prices. Stocks of food delivery companies such as Swiggy and Eternal and aviation companies such as InterGlobe Aviation and Spicejet also rose.

Stocks of capital market companies such as HDFC Asset Management Co., Nippon Life India Asset Management, and Motilal Oswal ended 5–7% higher after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government is taking a calibrated approach to attract more foreign capital and may introduce additional measures to increase capital inflows.

Among laggards, shares of Aurobindo Pharma fell over 4?ter the US Food and Drug Administration classified its subsidiary Eugia Pharma Specialities Ltd.'s Telangana unit as 'official action indicated'. "This could lead to some negative impact on the overall margins as the company might have to undertake certain remediation measures," ICICI Direct Research said in a report.

Shares of Vedanta Aluminium Metal, Vedanta Power, Vedanta Iron and Steel, and Vedanta Oil and Gas were listed on the NSE and BSE Monday after their demerger from the parent company Vedanta effective May 1. Shares of Vedanta Aluminium closed at INR 495.90 after listing at INR 522 on the NSE. Vedanta Power closed at INR 40.94 after listing at INR 41.80. Vedanta Oil and Gas ended at INR 36.10 after listing at INR 38, and Vedanta Iron and Steel closed at INR 21.06 after listing at INR 20 on the NSE.
