MUMBAI – Automakers sold 2.98 million vehicles to dealerships in India and overseas in May, up 19% on year but only 1% on month, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. Domestic wholesale sales grew nearly 17% on year to 2.35 million units, while exports rose 31% to 625,731 units, the data showed.
"Lower base effect of previous May and demand created due to reduced GST rates, with easier financing, is again getting reflected in higher off-take this month," SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said in a press release.
Two-wheelers, which form the biggest segment of automobiles sold in the country, registered wholesale sales of 1.90 million units in May, up almost 15% on year. Demand for scooters continued to outpace that for motorcycles, as both sales and production of scooters fared better last month.
In May, companies sold 739,667 scooters to Indian dealerships, up 27% on year, and 63,575 units overseas, up 35%. Their output grew almost 20% on year to 809,456 units. Motorcycles account for nearly 60% of the two-wheelers sold in India. Their domestic sales grew 7% on year to 1.11 million units and exports improved 31% to 436,500 units.
Despatches of passenger vehicles in India grew 25% on year to 379,764 units, while exports rose 13% to 76,051 units. Companies manufactured 432,050 passenger vehicles last month, up nearly 11% on year. These figures do not include sales of cars made by BMW, Mercedes, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo Auto. Including Tata Motors PV, domestic sales grew 27% on year to 438,854 units.
Wholesale sales of passenger cars and utility vehicles maintained a similar pace of growth in May in India, but overseas, the former saw contraction even as the latter registered robust growth.
Wholesale sales of three-wheelers in India improved on strength across sub-segments. Their sales in India grew 31% on year to 70,720 units, while their exports grew even faster at 56% to 48,513 units. Overall, their output improved 33% on year to 116,345 units in May. Companies cut production of electric rickshaws by half, although they account for a very tiny fraction of all the three-wheelers sold in India.
Automobile companies have sold 4.67 million vehicles in India in Apr-May, up 22% on year. Exports in the first two months of the ongoing financial year rose 34% on year to 1.25 million units. Output across automobile segments in Apr-May stood at 5.85 million units, up a shade over 19% on year.
