Seen under pressure in medium term on weak fundamentals

MUMBAI – Shares of fast-moving consumer goods companies are likely to continue to be under pressure in the coming week as, fundamentally, the sector is seen to be still grappling with rising input costs and low incomes, analysts said. However, in the near term, it might see some positive movement on the back of a fall in crude oil prices on hopes of a reopening of the Hormuz strait over the weekend.

Most FMCG giants are set to conduct a fresh round of price hikes, making everyday essentials costlier for consumers amid low wage growth. The latest increase in prices across categories such as soaps, detergents, toothpaste, and edible oils, in the range of 4-11%, come weeks after fuel prices were raised in May, analysts said.

Crisil Ratings expects the growth in the FMCG sector in the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) to be driven by price hikes amid rising inflation, according to a report by Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers. The rating agency expects the revenue of FMCG companies to grow by 8-10% in FY27, driven by price hikes, as the companies pass on higher crude-linked and packaging costs to customers.

On the other hand, the volume growth of FMCG companies is expected to be flat in the June quarter given the higher cost of raw materials owing to the war in West Asia, Pravin Bokade, head of research at IDBI Capital, said. "I doubt whether the volume will increase, because of the rising prices. The volume will remain more or less flat. In fact, I won't be surprised if the volume goes down," he said.

With consumption likely to fall because of weak discretionary income and rising product prices, Bokade thinks FMCG companies will face some pressure on their margins. "Revenue growth will again be slight, it will be flat to very less growth, and margins will be under pressure," he said. "So I don't expect FMCG companies to report good numbers overall."

Friday, the Nifty FMCG index closed 0.6% higher at 48827.60 points. The Nifty FMCG moved in tandem with the Nifty 50 index over the week, gaining more than 1% each. However, so far this month and in the past 30 days, the sectoral index has fallen even as the benchmark index has risen slightly. Shares of Nestle India will be in focus after the agency Asian News International reported that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had sent the company a notice over food quality issues.
