MUMBAI – Analysts expect stocks of several metal companies to rise next week if the US and Iran manage to strike a peace deal by this weekend, say analysts. However, investors are unlikely to place large bullish bets on industrial metal producers in the face of a key demand deterrent-the monsoon season. However, an end to the war in West Asia may release pent-up demand for construction and, in turn, industrial metals, which will be beneficial for metal companies, analysts said. Prices of precious metals, which have declined in the recent past due to a rise in crude oil prices, may support companies that mine these metals, analysts said.

A firm US dollar and US Treasury yields are placing a cap on the precious metals complex, along with the intensifying market's hawkish expectations for the US Federal Reserve, BMI Research, a subsidiary of Fitch Solutions said in a report. "Any prolongation or escalation in the US-Iran conflict would create upside risks to both inflation and (US) Fed forecasts," it said. Silver prices are also heading towards their year-to-date low, dragged down by macro headwinds. The US-Iran war has spelt similar trouble for the platinum group metals market, it said.

Following reports that the US and Iran may reach a peace deal as soon as this weekend, gold futures contract with August delivery closed nearly 1% higher at INR 150,222 per 10-gram on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India. Silver July futures prices rose over 1% to INR 242,000 per kilogram on MCX.

"There is a great deal of cost pressure when it comes to key inputs for industrial metals and this will likely keep metal investors from rejoicing at peace in the Middle East," an analyst at a domestic brokerage said. He added that pricing pressure on hot rolled coil steel in the domestic market has also added to the woes of companies producing industrial metals. The analysts added that tepid demand for construction and higher freight cost has kept metal volumes under pressure and he expects demand to improve once the war ends. "The sooner (the war ends), the better," he said.

Among individual stocks, Vedanta will be in focus as the four entities demerging from the mining company are set to list on stock exchanges Monday. Eligible shareholders will get one share of Vedanta Aluminium Metal, one share of Vedanta Power, one share of Vedanta Oil and Gas, and one share of Vedanta Iron and Steel, for every share held in Vedanta.

This week, Nifty Metal fell 2.8% to 12854.50 points. Hindalco Industries, National Aluminium Co., Tata Steel fell 4.3-6.5%. Jindal Stainless, Welspun Corp., and JSW Steel rose 0.6%-1.0%. After this dismal performance, technical analysts expect the index to consolidate at around 12500–13000 points next week.
