MUMBAI – Shares of comapnies part of Nifty Auto index are collectively reflecting a clear lack of directional bias heading into trade for the following week despite a strong close on Friday. They are trading in a sideways consolidation phase, marked by a series of swing highs and swing lows, technical analysts said. The sectoral index managed to close in the green this week having closed with a loss the previous week.

Friday, the Nifty Auto closed 1.95% higher at 26293.85 points. For the week, the index gained about half a percent. The Nifty Auto underperformed the benchmark Nifty 50 index, which closed 1.1% higher and the wider Nifty 200 index, which closed 0.7% higher for the week.

"Nifty Auto remains trapped within a congestion zone around the cluster of key moving averages, including the 20-DMA (day moving average), 50 DMA, and 100 DMA. The index is broadly oscillating within the 25,500–26,500 range, with immediate support placed around 25,500–25,400," Vatsal Bhuva, a technical and derivative analyst at LKP Securities said. "On the upside, multiple hurdles in the form of previous swing highs and the 100 DMA are placed in the 26,400–26,500 zone," he said.

Despite the Nifty Auto's strong closing on Friday, which was inline with the wider market momentum, the relative strength index is currently exhibiting the absence of any strong momentum, Bhuva said. This week, Ashok Leyland and Bosch were the top performers within the Nifty Auto index, up almost 5%, each. Uno Minda and Bajaj Auto remained the top laggards as both lost nearly 3%.

Amid the sharp surge in prices of petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas, companies have reported a spike in interest for electric vehicles. In May, penetration of electric passenger vehicles inched up to 6.7% from 6.1% in April. Penetration of electric two-wheelers increased to 9.2% in May from 7.9% in April. Ancillary companies such as Sona BLW Precision Forgings, Minda Corp., Uno Minda are expected to gain from rising electrification in the automobile space while companies such as Ather Energy, TVS Motor, and Mahindra & Mahindra are seen as front-runners among automakers, according to Elara Securities.

The market will closely track the wholesale sales data for automobiles next week.
