MUMBAI – A step forward in the US-Iran ceasefire deal led the bulls to charge into the equity market Friday and the headline equity indices to end the week sharply higher. The indices settled around 2% higher after US President Donald Trump late Thursday claimed that the US "just made a great settlement of the war with Iran", subject to "finalisation of documents". Crude oil prices, which were consistently below $90 a barrel during the session, lifted market sentiment. Other equity markets in Asia also closed significantly higher.
Trump said in the Oval Office that he expects a signing of the peace deal to occur "over the next few days", repeating claims he has made numerous times during the war, according to a CNBC report. Trump also said the "time and place of the signing" will be "announced shortly". The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened as soon as a deal is signed, he further said.
The Nifty 50 settled 2% higher at 23622.90, up 461.30 points. The 50-stock index ended the week up over 1%. The BSE Sensex closed 2.3% higher at 75527.95, up 1695.40 points. The indices started rising further after 1325 IST when reports said Iran's Mehr news agency had published a draft agreement between the US and Iran that would provide a framework to end the war on all fronts in West Asia. The US and Iran are reportedly nearing a peace agreement that could be signed in Geneva, Switzerland, as early as Sunday, with negotiations advancing on sanctions relief, nuclear talks, and a broader regional ceasefire framework, Moneycontrol reported.
Parallelly, crude oil prices fell steeply to near $85 a barrel. At 1525 IST, the Brent Crude Oil August futures contract was down over 4% from its previous close at $86.55 a barrel. Brent crude is still up nearly 19% from its pre-war level of $72.87 a barrel.
The broader market indices rose higher than the benchmarks. All smallcap indices closed nearly 3% higher while the midcap indices settled nearly 2.5% higher.
India VIX dropped almost 6% over the session to 14.7175. The volatility index fell for the second session and is down almost 6% in this period. Except the Nifty IT index, which was highly volatile throughout the session, all sectoral indices ended the session up. Indices tied to banking and financial services stocks rose the most.
Shriram Finance ended as the top gainer among Nifty 50 stocks, closing almost 8% higher. Index heavyweight HDFC Bank also boosted the index, rising nearly 4%. Bajaj Finance, Jio Financial Services, Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank closed 2.5–5.5% higher. The Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Bank, and Nifty Private Bank were among the top sectoral indices, up around 3?ch.
Automobile stocks Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Maruti Suzuki India, and Eicher Motors also rose, up 1.9–3.8%. Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland were the top gainers in the Nifty 200, up 10?ch.
Authum Investment & Infrastructure and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) were the major gainers in the Nifty 500. Shares of Authum Investment settled over 15% higher and those of Tata Teleservices closed over 10% higher. Mtar Technologies ended nearly 14% higher after the company's management clarified that the data centre project linked to its key US customer was on track to be completed by 2028.
Equitas Small Finance Bank closed the session nearly 6% higher after laying out its medium-term outlook. The small finance bank sees its loan book growing at a compounded annual rate of 20% over the next five years.
Nestle India ended as the worst performer in the 50-stock index, down over 3%. The stock fell after the agency Asian News International reported that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had sent the company a notice over food quality issues. This followed complaints on social media that insects were found in Maggi packets, according to the report.
State-owned upstream oil companies Oil and Natural Gas Corp. and Oil India settled lower Friday. According to brokerages, the government's implementation of a 16.66?fective royalty on crude oil from nomination onshore fields is likely to add to the tax burden on these oil explorers and hit their earnings. They were also major drags on the Nifty 200 index.
Cemindia Projects was the top loser in the Nifty 500 index, down over 4%. The Nifty IT was the sole loser among sectoral indices, but it fell marginally. Tech Mahindra and HCL Technologies were the only information technology companies in the Nifty 50 index to decline. While Tech Mahindra fell over 2%, HCL Tech was down marginally.
