MUMBAI – Ignoring the significant fall in crude oil prices to $92 a barrel, benchmark equity indices closed marginally lower on Thursday, after a highly volatile session. Fresh escalation in the US-Iran war dampened market sentiment in the first half of the session. However, gains in index heavyweights ICICI Bank and Reliance Industries helped the Nifty 50 index recover and hold onto the gains till at least an hour before the market closed.

"The equity market was highly volatile throughout the session due to the expiry of the Sensex's weekly derivatives contract," Vipin Kumar, technical and derivatives analyst at Globe Capital Market, said. The Nifty 50 settled 0.2% lower at 23161.60, down 53.35 points. The BSE Sensex also closed 0.2% lower at 73832.55, down 150.63 points. The Nifty 50 is down 8% from its pre-war levels.

At 1520 IST, Brent crude oil August futures were 0.6% lower at $92.58 a barrel. It was down over 3% from the intraday high of $95.50 a barrel.

All broader market indices underperformed, shedding more than their benchmark peers. Mid-cap indices were down 1?ch, while small-cap indices settled 0.4–0.8% lower. India VIX, the market's fear gauge, ended marginally lower at 15.6125.

Information technology stocks were the biggest laggards in the Nifty 50 index. Shares of IT companies tumbled as analysts expect Claude Fable 5, a newly launched artificial intelligence model by Anthropic, to pose risks to Indian IT service companies. The Nifty IT index fell the most among sectoral indices, down 1.6%, with all its constituents in the red.

"Capability (of AI models) has improved drastically, which has become better at software development," Sumit Pokharna, IT analyst at Kotak Securities, said. "This has increased the risk that Indian IT services jobs, especially application development and maintenance, will get done by fewer human beings or engineers in the future." This is expected to disrupt the existing models of Indian IT services companies, he said.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Eternal, Bharat Electronics, and Trent fell around 2?ch.

In the Nifty 200 index, Adani Energy Solutions, Power Finance Corp., One 97 Communications, and REC were the major losers. The stocks were down 3.3–4.4%. Shares of Power Finance Corp. fell after President Droupadi Murmu approved the merger of REC with the non-banking finance company.

Jain Resource Recycling was the top laggard in the Nifty 500 index, down nearly 10%. CCL Products (India), Balkrishna Industries, Cemindia Projects were the other major losers in the index, down around 5?ch. Shares of Rajesh Exports hit the 5% lower circuit Thursday. The stock has fallen nearly 23% since the Securities and Exchange Board of India issued an interim order against the multinational gold and jewellery company, and its promoter Rajesh Mehta.

Gains in the index heavyweight ICICI Bank prevented the Nifty 50 from falling further. Shares of the bank closed almost 2% higher and it was the top gaining stock in the index. The stock rose as private sector banks were said to benefit more than state-owned lenders from the Reserve Bank of India's move to cover the hedging costs for the amount banks raise through three-to-five year foreign currency non-resident bank deposits till Sept. 30. Large private sector banks, including ICICI Bank, have all raised rates for FCNR dollar deposits by nearly 300 basis points to 6% over the last two days after the RBI notified the scheme Monday.

Mahindra & Mahindra and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the other Nifty 50 stocks to gain, closing over 1% higher each. Hyundai Motor India, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, and Vodafone Idea were the top gainers in the Nifty 200 index and were up over 2?ch.

Aegis Logistics ended as the best performer among the Nifty 500 gainers and closed with nearly 16% gains. Zee Entertainment Enterprises was the second-best performer, closing over 8% higher. The stock rose after the company said on Wednesday that it would raise INR 23 billion in one or more tranches to fund its business initiatives. On May 26, the company said it was in talks with the Federation Internationale de Football Association to broadcast the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in India.

Sugar manufacturing companies such as Balrampur Chini Mills, Dhampur Sugar Mills, and Triveni Engineering & Industries settled higher after the central government exempted from excise duty petrol blended with 22–30% ethanol, extending support to blends beyond the currently existing E20. Shares of the companies were up 1.3-2.5%.

Shares of DOMS Industries ended over 6% higher after the company said late on Wednesday that it would acquire Reynolds Pens India. The stock has closed higher for the past three sessions.
