MUMBAI – After a highly volatile final hour of trade Wednesday, the benchmark Nifty 50 index closed marginally lower from Tuesday. A significant fall in crude oil prices, despite an escalation of the war in West Asia, largely kept the 50-stock index in positive territory until 1500 IST. The BSE Sensex managed to end marginally higher from Tuesday.

Investors were highly cautious as they got mixed signals from West Asia. US Central Command said its "forces began launching self-defense strikes against Iran" in response to "yesterday's (Tuesday's) downing of a US Army Apache helicopter". Prior to these strikes, US Vice-President J.D. Vance had said earlier in the day that the US-Israel war on Iran could end in a week or a few months. At 1547 IST, the Brent Crude August futures contract was marginally down at $91.35 a barrel.

The inflows into open-ended equity mutual funds recorded in May were INR 229.08 billion, data for the month from the Association of Mutual Funds in India showed. This is the lowest inflow recorded in 2026. "The decline in equity inflows reflects investors' nervousness given the evolving macroeconomic landscape," Ashwini Shami, president and chief portfolio manager at OmniScience Capital, said. "This environment is heavily impacted by the West Asia crisis, a crude oil shock, inflation, and rupee depreciation, combined with a slowing corporate earnings growth outlook driven by margin compression and expected interest rate hikes."

Traders added short positions in the options chain of the Nifty 50 index, writing call options across the board and buying put contracts near the spot level during the final hour of trade. This dragged the index down to close at 23214.95 points Wednesday, down 27.15 points from Tuesday. Only 19 constituents of the Nifty 50 index closed higher.

The BSE Sensex closed 64.42 points, or 0.1%, higher at 73983.18 points. The India Volatility Index, the market's fear gauge, ended 0.4% higher at 15.6325.

The broader market indices, however, underperformed their benchmark peers and settled over 1% lower. Barring three, all sectoral indices also closed lower, with the Nifty Media being the key laggard, down over 2%.

Metal companies were the major drags in the Nifty 50 index. Hindalco Industries ended as the worst performer, down over 3% from Tuesday. Tata Steel and Adani Enterprises were down around 2?ch. The Nifty Metal index also ended almost 2% lower, with most of its constituents in the red.

Coal India and Oil and Natural Gas Corp. were the other major laggards in the 50-stock index, down 2.7–3.4%. In the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices, Oil India was the major loser, down over 10%. The stock fell after global brokerage Morgan Stanley went "underweight" on it from "overweight" and trimmed the target price by more than 28% to INR 404. Brokerages flagged delayed hikes in natural gas prices and weaker refinery margins until downstream companies recover from losses as major negatives for the company.

Gold loan companies were down amid a fall in gold prices globally due to the escalation of war in West Asia. Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance were down 3% and over 6%, respectively. Kalyan Jewellers India was down almost 5% in the Nifty 200 index.

Meanwhile, fast-moving consumer goods companies supported the Nifty 50. Nestle India and Hindustan Unilever were the top performers in the index, up around 2?ch. ITC closed over 1% higher. The Nifty FMCG was the top perfomer among sectoral indices, up 1%. Broking firm Nomura Financial Advisory and Securities expects goods and services tax-led benefits to continue supporting volume growth of consumer companies.

Index heavyweights ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank were up over 1?ch and limited the fall of the 50-stock index. However, their heavyweight peer, Reliance Industries, reversed an initial rise and closed nearly 1% lower. The stock had risen in early trade after the company announced a partnership with Meta Platforms to set up a 168 megawatt data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Coromandel International was the top performer in the Nifty 200, closing 4% higher. Fertiliser stocks rose on the back of reports that the government subsidy for the sector may rise by 100% in the financial year 2026–27 (Apr-Mar). Other fertiliser companies, Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals, Tata Chemicals, Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore, and National Fertilizers ended 1.4-5.0% higher.

In the Nifty 500 index, Cartrade Tech was the top performer, up over 12%. Concord Biotech was up nearly 5%. Shares of the company rose after it received US Food and Drug Administration approval for its Tofacitinib tablet. Afcons Infrastructure also rose after the company bagged an order worth INR 53 billion to build a 10.14 km-long breakwater at the upcoming Vadhvan Port in Maharashtra. The stock closed nearly 5% higher. Aegis Logistics settled over 2% higher after the company Tuesday said it expects margins from the gas division to be sustained at INR 7,000 per tonne in FY27 even amid disruption in supply of liquefied petroleum gas.

The CMR Green Technologies stock was listed on the bourses Wednesday. The shares ended at INR 241.20 on the National Stock Exchange, up nearly 26% from the listing price.
