NEW DELHI –  The Indian pharmaceutical market grew nearly 11% on year in May, driven by strong growth in chronic therapies such as cardiac, anti-diabetic, and respiratory medicines, with patients possibly advancing purchases amid concerns about supply and price risks linked to the war in West Asia, according to Pharmatrac Indian Pharmaceutical Market May data.

Cardiac therapies, the largest segment in the domestic market with 15% share, grew 13.9% during the month, with nearly 3% increase in unit growth. Anti-diabetic therapies expanded 16.8%, making it among the fastest-growing major therapy areas. Respiratory therapies rose 12.3%, boosted by a 10.0% increase in volumes.  

Concerns about potential supply disruptions and higher prices amid the West Asia war may have prompted some patients to stock up on medicines used in chronic conditions such as cardiac disorders, diabetes, nutrition, and respiratory diseases, said Sheetal Sapale, vice president-commercial at Pharmatrac, during a webinar on Monday.

"Coming to the growth drivers, all three growth drivers, the new products, the price as well as the volume, are positive for most of the therapies for overall IPM (Indian Pharmaceuticals Market), and if you look at most of the top therapies, in the majority of the places we see a strong positive volume growth," Sapale said.

With regard to acute therapies such as gastro and anti-infectives, Sapale said these are dependent on the monsoon season and are yet to pick up momentum. Growth in gastrointestinal therapies was relatively moderate at 6.7%, while anti-infectives expanded 6.1%, lagging the performance of chronic therapy segments. 

Vitamin, mineral, and nutritional products grew 12.5% in May, while anti-neoplastics rose 13.4%, dermatology therapies 11.3%, neuro/central nervous system therapies 11.0%, blood-related therapies 11.0%, and gynaecological products 9.5%.  End
