MUMBAI – A breakthrough in the West Asia conflict and the resultant fall in crude oil prices led domestic benchmark stock indices to recover Tuesday. Both the benchmark indices closed higher after logging a 1?ll on Monday. The indices witnessed a volatile session Tuesday due to expiry of the Nifty 50's weekly derivatives contract, analysts said. Banking and financial services stocks were the major gainers during the session following the Reserve Bank of India's dollar-rupee forex swap facility for public sector undertakings.

Analysts see the market sentiment being directed by news flow on the global front. The announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, hours after Israel fired missiles at Iran in retaliation to an attack earlier in the day, lifted market sentiment. However, analysts are cautious of negative news from West Asia, upon which the market is likely to give up its gains. At 1452 IST, the Brent crude oil August futures contract was down over 2% from its previous close at $92.16 a barrel.

On Tuesday, the Nifty 50 settled 0.5% higher at 23242.10, up 119.10 points. The BSE Sensex also closed 0.5% higher at 73918.76, up 394.50 points. Only 21 Nifty 50 constituents traded lower during the session. Nervousness among investors fell sharply on news of the ceasefire and easing crude oil prices, with India VIX settling over 8% lower at 15.5750. Index heavyweight ICICI Bank, with 2% gains, supported the Nifty 50 index.

Broader market indices fared better than the benchmark indices, settling over 1% higher. They were up 1.2–1.7%. Barring the Nifty IT and Nifty Media, all sectoral indices were higher. Indices tied to banking and financial services stocks gained the most among sectoral indices.

The Nifty PSU Bank was the top gainer, up nearly 4%. The Nifty Bank, Nifty Private Bank, and Nifty Financial Services closed 1.4-2.1% higher. The Reserve Bank of India introduced a dollar-rupee forex swap facility for external commercial borrowings and overseas foreign currency borrowings with a concessional forex swap facility for public sector undertakings. This was opened to attract foreign capital inflows and strengthen the domestic currency.

After falling for the past three sessions, InterGlobe Aviation rose 4% and ended as the top gainer among Nifty 50 constituents. The stock gained after the company laid out aggressive targets for 2029–30 (Apr-Mar) during its analyst day. It plans to add more flights to its fleet, increase the passenger count, and the number of flights operated daily.

Oil and Natural Gas Corp. ended as the worst performer in the 50-stock index, down over 2%. Shares of the company closed lower for the fourth session in a row and shed over 3% during this period.

Jio Financial Services ended as the second-biggest gainer in the index. The stock closed over 2% higher. State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Shriram Finance, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Bajaj Finserv were up 1.1–2.1%.

In the Nifty 200 universe, too, banking and financial services stocks gained. Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, and Canara Bank were up 4.3–5.6%. Punjab National Bank and Indian Bank closed nearly 4% higher each.

In the Nifty 500 index, Cemindia Projects ended as among the top gainers. The stock hit the 10% upper circuit at INR 1,203.80. Data Patterns (India), up over 10%, ended as the top gainer in the index. Jain Resource Recycling and Belrise Industries were among the other gainers in the Nifty 500 index, up nearly 9?ch.

Shares of Gabriel India closed over 7% higher after Motilal Oswal Financial Services initiated coverage on the stock with a 'buy' rating and a target price of INR 1,266. According to the brokerage, the company has taken steps to expand into sunroofs, solar dampers, and e-mobility over two years with its plan to launch at least one new product each year.

Rail Vikas Nigam ended over 2% higher in the Nifty 500 after the company said it won an order worth INR 2.21 billion from South East Central Railway. The recent contract awarded by the South East Central Railway is for several minor projects that have to be executed over the next two years, the company said in a filing.

ONGC and Titan Co. were the major losers in the Nifty 200 index, down over 2?ch. Vodafone Idea gave up its initial gains and ended nearly 2% lower. The stock gained in early trade as the Bombay High Court Monday set aside the government's demand orders seeking payment of one-time spectrum charge from the telecom companies for the years 2008 to 2012.

Tata Technologies, Schneider Electric Infrastructure, and Acutaas Chemicals were the three major losers in the Nifty 500 index. The stocks settled around 4% lower each. Shares of NLC India closed over 2% lower after the government said it plans to sell up to 3% stake in the company through an offer for sale. The stock ended lower for the fifth straight session.
