MUMBAI – Renewed escalation in the West Asia war pulled down headline stock indices for a second session Monday. The indices closed around 1% lower each as crude oil prices stayed at higher levels of around $97 a barrel. Fresh strikes between Iran and Israel and a stalemate in the US-Iran peace talks worsened sentiment in the domestic market. All Asian equity markets also ended lower, with South Korea's KOSPI down over 8%.

Post the Reserve Bank of India's and the government's announcement of measures on Friday that are expected to arrest the rupee's depreciation, analysts turned hopeful about an improvement in the equity market. However, they also said crude oil prices must come down and economic growth should improve for foreign investors to turn buyers. At 1533 IST, Brent crude oil August futures were over 4% higher at $96.98 a barrel.

The Nifty 50 settled 1% lower at 23123, down 243.70 points. The BSE Sensex also closed 1% lower at 73524.26, down 719.08 points. Only 10 Nifty 50 constituents traded higher during the session. After cooling in the last two sessions, investor nervousness again saw a rise Monday. The volatility index, India VIX, settled over 8% higher at 17.0850. Index heavyweights HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Reliance Industries ended 0.9-2.2% lower.

Broader markets also settled lower, with all small-cap indices ending almost 2% lower each. Mid-cap indices settled 0.9-1.5% lower. Barring the Nifty Healthcare, all sectoral indices fell. The Nifty Realty and Nifty Metal fell the most among their sectoral peers, down over 2?ch.

Wipro was the major loser among Nifty 50 constituents, down over 8%. Shares of Wipro were down for the second session following the record date for its largest share buyback. On the other hand, Max Healthcare Institute gained the most in the 50-stock index, up over 3%. The stock rose for five continuous sessions and gained over 7% during this period.

Barring APL Apollo Tubes, all Nifty Metal constituents ended lower Monday. National Aluminium Co. and Steel Authority of India were the major drags on the sectoral index, down around 4?ch. The Nifty Metal index fell for the fourth straight session. According to a metal analyst at a top broking firm, concerns about inflation, rising geopolitical tensions, and a fall in metal prices were the reasons for the drop in metal stocks.

"Higher valuations of metal stocks and coming off of metals on the London Metal Exchange were some of the factors that led to the fall in domestic metal stocks," Tushar Chaudhari, metals analyst at Prabhudas Lilladher, said. JSW Steel and Tata Steel closed 1.6% lower each and both ended lower for the past three sessions. "A fire broke out at Tata Steel's Port Talbot plant in the UK can be the reason for the stock's continuous fall," said Ajit Sahu, research analyst at IDBI Capital.

Most automobile stocks were also down, with the Nifty Auto index logging nearly 2% losses. All the sectoral index members traded lower for the session. Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles settled 2–3% lower in the Nifty 50 index.

Despite multiple hikes in prices of petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas and heatwave conditions, retail sales of automobiles in India grew almost 10% on year in May, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association said Monday. Retail passenger vehicle sales grew 23% on year but fell 6% on month. Retail sales of commercial vehicles grew 5% on year but fell a shade over 18% on month in May.

Financial services and banking stocks also pulled down the Nifty 50 index. Jio Financial Services, Shriram Finance, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, and HDFC Life Insurance Co. were 2.1-3.7% down.

GE Vernova T&D India was the biggest loser in the Nifty 200 index. The stock was down nearly 7%. Meanwhile, Netweb Technologies ended as the major drag in the Nifty 500 index, down nearly 9%.

Healthcare and pharmaceutical companies limited further fall in the benchmark indices, by gaining the most during the session. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise and Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries gained 0.4–0.7%. The Nifty Healthcare, the sole gainer among sectoral indices, ended marginally higher.

"The pharmaceuticals and healthcare are considered to be the defensive counter in the time of market volatility," Rupak De, senior technical analyst at LKP Securities, said. "So, these two sectors are witnessing a buying momentum."

Fortis Healthcare and Alkem Laboratories were the major gainers in the Nifty 200 index, along with Max Healthcare. The stocks were up around 2?ch. CCL Products (India), Cartrade Tech, and Caplin Point Laboratories ended as the top performers in the Nifty 500 index, up 3.8-8.7%.

Shares of Nestle India closed nearly 1% higher. The stock closed higher since Friday, when the company said it achieved the highest growth among peers in terms of expanding its reach across geographies in the last financial year. The growth was primarily from increasing its sales coverage to rural locations.
