MUMBAI – Shares of pharmaceutical companies will likely be in a range in the coming week with no sector-specific triggers. Technical analysts expect the traders to buy pharmaceutical stocks on every dip. While there is some comfort in valuations, a sharp rise in these stocks is unlikely, some analysts said. From a month's perspective, some research heads had said that these stocks would be resilient. However, the upcoming monsoon season is watched out for by companies heavy on acute drugs, analysts said.

While these companies are not directly affected by the impact of West Asia war, and far insulated from the energy shocks, some analysts worry that shortage of ammonia may hit supply of sourcing of certain active pharmaceutical ingredients and solvents. From a short-term perspective, this is the main worry, an analyst said.

Further, if the supply of packaging materials comes under constraint, that would be a major worry for the entire sector. The rise in prices of these materials is not a major concern, analysts said. In the March quarter, the rise in costs due to these was already visible. The overall expenses of pharmaceutical and healthcare companies belonging to Nifty 500 index rose 14% to a 10-quarter high.

The upcoming monsoon season will be key for acute drug makers such as Mankind Pharma Ltd. and Alkem Laboratories as infectious diseases, especially dengue and malaria, increase during this period. In the June quarter last year, the season was weak, and, hence, a low base is also seen in favour of these companies. The acute drug market is seen growing 7-8% this year, an analyst said.

On Friday, the Nifty Pharma index closed at 24248.05 points, up 0.3%. During this week, the sectoral index declined just 0.4% as compared to a 0.8% fall in Nifty 50. This week, Wockhardt and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals fell the most whereas Ipca Laboratories and Laurus Labs outperformed with 6-8% gains. In the near-term, a dip towards 23800-23500 points would attract buying opportunities, Vipin Kumaar, assistant vice-president, technical and derivatives, at Globe Capital Market, said. On the other hand, gains will be capped at 24800 points on an immediate basis, he added.
