NEW DELHI – Analysts are positive on telecommunications stocks in the near term, with eyes on the next round of tariff hikes, broadly expected in the next quarter. In the coming week, the BSE Telecommunication index is expected to find initial support at 3505 points and counter resistance at 3750 points, according to Ganesh Angaj, head technical analyst at NVS Brokerage Pvt. Ltd. Beyond these levels, Angaj estimated support and resistance at 3380 points and 3850 points, respectively.

Friday, the index fell 1.5%, reversing a three-day winning streak, to end the day at 3629.88 points. As many as 14 of the 20 index constituents ended the session in the red. During the week, the index fell by nearly 2%. On the other hand, the BSE 500 and BSE India 150 ended flat at 35141.95 points and 17998.63 points, respectively.

This week, multiple media reports said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's early assessment indicated that Bharti Airtel's latest offering, Priority Postpaid, which leverages 5G network slicing, does not violate net neutrality norms.

Piyush Pandey, senior vice-president and research analyst at Centrum Broking Ltd., said offerings based on 5G network slicing may not move the needle in the near term but are expected to attract more postpaid customers for Bharti Airtel in the long term. He estimates that around 10% of network providers' subscriber base could comprise postpaid users in the next five years, up from around 7% currently.
