MUMBAI – Headline equity indices closed marginally lower Friday post the rate decision of the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee. The RBI and the government announced measures that are expected to arrest the rupee's depreciation, but analysts said crude oil prices must come down and economic growth should improve for foregin investors to turn buyers. The indices remained choppy for most of the session, after opening higher.

The RBI left the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25% and decided to continue with its "neutral" policy stance. It also announced several measures, including a concessional forex swap facility and relief on hedging costs, to help improve foreign flows. The government on Friday also exempted foreign institutional investors from paying capital gains tax on investments in government bonds. These measures are expected to improve flows and arrest depreciation in the Indian currency. Post this, the rupee appreciated nearly 1% and ended below 95 a dollar.

Analysts expect these measure to be a tailwind for foreign inflows, but the equity market largely ignored this, with benchmark indices ending a tad lower. Analysts said while the measures are positive for flows, they will only improve once crude oil prices fall.

The Nifty 50 settled 0.2% lower at 23366.70, down 49.85 points. The BSE Sensex also closed 0.2% lower at 74243.34, down 116.67 points. India VIX, however, showed easing of nervousness among investors, settling nearly 1% lower at 15.7875. The Nifty 50 ended the week with a loss of nearly 1%. In the last 30 days, it has shed nearly 3%.

In the broader market, barring the Nifty Smallcap 250, all indices ended the session 0.1–0.4% lower. However, most sectoral indices fared better than the benchmark indices. The Nifty Media ended as the highest gainer among them, up over 3%. The sectoral index tied to metal companies was the major drag, down nearly 2%.

Hindalco Industries ended the session as the biggest laggard in the Nifty 50 index. The stock was down almost 3% and extended its losses for the third session in a row. Adani Enterprises was the top performer in the Nifty 50, ending with 2.5% gains.

"RBI MPC outcome is giving some kind of tailwind to the FIIs," Sanjeev Hota, head of equities strategy at Standard Chartered India, said. Though the GDP and inflation announcements were almost in line with expectations, Hota sees the inflation growth to largely depend on crude oil price trends. At 1638 IST, Brent crude oil August futures were 0.2% lower at $94.83 a barrel.

"The measures announced today by both the RBI and the government should ease pressure on the rupee," Rajani Sinha, chief economist at CareEdge, said in a note. "If the conflict de-escalates in the near term and global crude oil prices average around $90/bbl in FY27, we expect the rupee to average in the range of 92–93 against the US dollar. However, if Brent Crude prices average closer to $100/bbl, the rupee could remain near the 94 per US dollar level."

Shares of most metal companies were down in the session amid broader weakness in metal prices. Tata Steel was down almost 2%. A massive fire broke out at Tata Steel's Port Talbot plant in the UK on Wednesday evening, with the company still unable to assess the cause of the fire or the scale of the damage and its potential impact on operations; this is also expected to weigh on the stock. JSW Steel closed over 1% lower.

Wipro was down almost 3%, the second-biggest loser in the Nifty 50 index. The stock closed lower on the record date for its share buyback. In April, the company had announced its largest-ever buyback worth INR 150 billion at INR 250 per share. In the Nifty 200 index, Hindustan Zinc and National Aluminium Co. were the top losers, down 4.4–6.1% lower. Vedanta shed almost 4% in the index.

Wockhardt ended as the biggest loser in the Nifty 500 index, down over 7%. The stock continued to fall for the second straight session despite the company announcing its plan Thursday to launch novel antibiotic Zaynich in the US, India, Europe, and emerging markets over the next two years.

Shares of Rajesh Exports hit the 5% lower circuit for the second session Friday. The company said it was in the process of addressing the concerns raised by the Securities and Exchanges Board of India in its interim order, issued Wednesday against the company and its promoter, stating that almost all of the company's revenues between the financial year 2020-21 (Apr-Mar) and FY26 were "misrepresented".

Hindustan Unilever was the second-top gainer in the Nifty 50 index, up 2%. The stock rose after two sessions of fall. Banking and financial services stocks Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, and SBI Life Insurance Co. settled higher for the session, up 1.0-1.7%.

Adani Group companies were the top gainers in the Nifty 200 index. Adani Green Energy and Adani Energy Solutions were up 3.9-7.2%. In the Nifty 500 index, Zee Entertainment Enterprises closed 7.5% higher, as the major gainer. A news report on Friday said the company plans to charge INR 16,600 per 10 seconds for spot advertising during the streaming of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for both television and digital platforms.
